XI'AN, China — Michelle Obama stopped down for five-hours for a purely touristic visit, giving Obama and her family a view of China's ancient history. The city is the terminus of the legendary Silk Road, a series of trade routes that linked the East and West throughout history, and is also home of the Terra Cotta Army.

The massive clay sculptures were discovered in the spring of 1974 in the eastern suburbs of the city by farmers digging a well near the grave of China's first emperor, Qinshihuang.

Obama was led through the archeological site by Cao Wei, director of the site's museum.

She went down into several pits, the largest of which contains 6,000 life sized warriors arranged along brick-paved corridors in battle formation.

Cao led Obama, her daughters and mother onto a restoration platform in pit number one, where archeologists put together fragments of the sculptures like jigsaw puzzles. The first lady and her family lingered in the pit, asking questions and listening as Cao explained through an interpreter that the soldiers have different poses. Their facial expressions are also varied.

The dusty orange figures — ranging from 6 foot to 6 foot 5 inches — were about Obama's height. Few of the site's 5 million annual visitors get to look into their steely faces as the first lady did.

Obama and her family also visited the 600-year-old Xi'an city wall, an imposing rectangular structure that spans 9 miles and reaches 40 feet high, is the oldest and most well preserved defensive city wall in the country.

A ceremony there included men dressed in the sculptural military uniforms of Tang Dynasty warriors and folk dancers in colorful costumes. A group of children from a local high school greeted the first lady. She smiled and the family clapped as they performed tricks, including shuttlecock kicking. Obama took a turn, winning applause.

But the real question was — would she be able to resist joining a group of the teens who were doing double dutch?

The sun was shining, a light breeze filled the air. A young woman invited Michelle Obama to jump rope and, of course, she said yes. Changing from her kitten heels into flats, she skipped a green jump rope for several beats.

When the young women, who were from Northwest Polytechnic University affiliated high school, asked Obama to join in the double dutch, she demurred.

"I've already done my jumping and I'm not going to break a leg," she said.

Xi'an is located in the home province of Xi Jinping, China's president. Xi's father was instrumental in the restoration and preservation of the city wall.

On Sunday, Obama walked along a section of the Great Wall outside of Beijing. In a video posted on the White House website, she called it "one of the great wonders on the planet."

Obama will spend her last two days in China in Chengdu, where she will meet with high school students and, along with her mother and daughters, will visit a research base home to giant pandas.

Her final stop before returning to Washington is lunch at a Tibetan restaurant in Chengdu to engage with that community, which complains of authoritarian crackdowns on their political leaders and widespread discriminatory practices by the Chinese government. The subject of Tibet is politically sensitive, and a senior White House official traveling with the first lady said Michelle Obama wanted to meet with them because they are an important minority group

Writer's Block: Finding a Way Forward in West Timor

I haven't been to Kupang before, which just goes to show how big this Indonesian archipelago is. It's on the western part of Timor island, the east being now another country called Timor Leste, and the flight there from Jakarta takes around three hours depending if it makes a stopover in Surabaya or Denpasar.

The area is part of East Nusa Tenggara province, and is ranked one of the least developed areas of the country in terms of economy, nutrition, access to health, education, infrastructure and natural resources. NTT has one of the highest incidences of stunting in children, and providing nutrient-rich food supplements for pregnant mothers and babies is an important focus for organizations such as the UN's World Food Program, to carry out their nutritional intervention program.

Most of the people in the poorer regencies, such as in villages in Soe, in the southern part of Central Timor, around two and a half hour drive from Kupang, still live off their land, exploiting forested areas as nomadic farmers. However, this is being increasingly discouraged through programs such as the Food for Asset Program, also done with the assistance of the WFP, which incentivizes farmers to grow their own food crop and high-value trees as future assets in return for rice.

In this way, farmers no longer need to exploit the surrounding forests for food, but can work on their land to grow crops such as corn that they can eat and sell, and look forward to a return on their labor when, in a decade or so, their trees, such as mahogany, are ready to be monetized. Thus, small local farmers are encouraged to think and act long-term, and no longer need to live from day to day.

When I arrive, the climate is at the tail end of the rainy season, and everything is covered in luscious green as far as the eye can see. It is hard to imagine that this island is anything other than fertile and abundant. A local told me, however, that the area has three seasons: green, the short few months when rain falls and everything blooms and cattle are put to pasture to fatten up; yellow, when the dry season robs trees of their leaves, dries up the grass and everything becomes barren; and black, when the land is scorched from forest fires.

Nevertheless, despite it being the rainy season, the river is pitifully shallow, revealing the rocks on the river bed. Clearly, water is a big problem here. No amount of digging could generate enough water to fill wells. Plans of building a dam or water reservoir remain a pie in the sky as there's never enough money to fund the construction.

Indeed, infrastructure is the main drawback for the economy in this eastern part of Indonesia. Although the main provincial road itself is actually in good condition and you can get a better phone signal in Kupang than you would in congested Jakarta. As soon as you go off the main highway, however, access to the villages is via shoddily built roads that soon turn into bumpy dirt paths with a bit of wear. As to phone signal, it becomes patchy the closer it gets to the village, after which it disappears altogether.

A district head from a village near Kupang complains of lack of attention from the central government as well as lack of support from the area's legislative representatives. He wants to focus more on reviving local farming, he says, and make every household as well as school cultivate vegetable gardens. That way, they don't need to rely on transporting outside commodities in order to feed themselves.

The school I visit and practically every house I pass, has abundant vegetable gardens and pots growing tomatoes, carrots, mung beans, spinach and other popular vegetables they could readily eat themselves or sell. From donors such as the WFP, this local leader prefers assistance such as corn-grinding machines and corn as well as practical know-how.

No wonder the local parties' representatives don't really support him. After all, what benefit is there for them in terms of projects and kickbacks when they would actually help farmers become more self-sufficient?

The district head is also keen to have investors come and build a factory and get the economy going by creating jobs and alternative livelihoods. A Korean company is currently interested and is checking out the area. A good thing, surely, I say. Yes, he says, except that here there's not enough electricity around. How could you build a factory without electricity?

I see his point. Even in the best hotel in Kupang, the electricity keeps going off every ten minutes.

Everyone's New Friend

All sides of the international community are flocking to Tunisia to establish diplomatic and economic ties

In the early years after the Egyptian Revolution of 1952, the US was perceived as friendly. It was only in 1956 that its charismatic first president, Gamal Abdel Nasser, clearly shifted into the Soviet camp (however non-aligned he had claimed to be). While the US put Nasser under pressure for his social reforms and anti-Israel rhetoric, the Soviets offered him almost unconditional help. Hence, between the years 1956 and 1973, Egypt grew close to the Soviet Union.

Much like Egypt in the early years of the Cold War, Tunisia today is facing economic and political challenges and is being courted by almost every side. Tunisia's second republic was inaugurated in January 2014, after the National Constituent Assembly adopted a new constitution. The Constituent Assembly has been one of the most important achievements of the Tunisian revolution, and writing the constitution has benefited from massive funding from the US and Europe. The West hails Tunisia as the success story of the Arab Spring.

But non-Western countries have also shown their interest in Tunisia. The chairman of Iranian Parliament, Ali Larijani, visited Tunisia in early February. He met the country's political leaders, and expressed his support to its transition, calling for stronger economic ties and offering cooperation and assistance. But Larijani also denounced the US during a speech in the Constituent Assembly at a ceremony to mark the adoption of the new constitution, prompting a walkout from the American delegation. He used the occasion to remind America of Iran's reach in the Arab world.

Ten days later, US Secretary of State John Kerry made a surprise stop in Tunisia. Discussing academic cooperation and economic aid with Tunisia's leaders, he renewed his country's promise to help to secure a democratic transition and stressed the importance of developing security and fighting terrorism together. He also handed the prime minister, Mehdi Jomaa, an invitation to the White House. That important official delegation is flying from Tunis to Washington, DC, in early April.

Two weeks after Kerry's visit, another surprise guest arrived: Russia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergey Lavrov. He agreed to grant academic scholarships to Tunisian students, called on Russian tourists to continue visiting the country, and expressed his wish for a stronger economic partnership with the country. He also offered Russia's expertise in combating terrorism. As this was taking place during the Ukrainian crisis, Lavrov threw in some harsh criticisms of the US and the European Union, echoing Iran's Larijani.

High-level and executive delegations from the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, France, Italy, Japan, Serbia and other countries have also visited Tunisia since February. Financial and political aid is flowing from all sides.

In contrast, Arab countries have been almost totally absent from the country's affairs. Their loans, when they did come, carried high interest rates and harsh political conditions. The Saudis and Emiratis are still snubbing Tunisia for having flirted with the Islamists over the past two years, whereas the Qataris are unhappy over the fall of the Ennahda-led government.

There appears to be an excess of soft power targeting Tunisia these days. But will the country look East or West to forge its new friendships? Most likely, Tunisia will keep its old diplomacy: not getting too close and not staying to distant, it will try to be everyone's friend. It seems, however, that the best friends of the leading Arab Spring country will not be Arabs.

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes or e-cigs) are battery-powered devices that simulate tobacco smoking without the smoke. The smoker can control the amount of nicotine that is delivered without exposing others to the risks of secondhand smoke. Except for the toxicity of nicotine, you'd think e-cigarettes should be safer than tobacco smoking, right? Recent research suggests e-cigarettes may carry health risks of their own.

E-cigarettes contain some of the same cancer-causing agents found in tobacco, plus additional contaminants not found in regular cigarettes. Additionally, researchers have found that the amount of nicotine delivered by e-cigs may be quite different from the labelled value, such that a user might receive a much higher or lower dose than anticipated. Some electronic cigarettes intended to deliver no nicotine actually did produce small amounts.

E-Cigarettes Contain Some Contaminants Found in Tobacco

Early studies indicated e-cigarettes contained some of the undesirable chemicals found in tobacco. For example, a 2009 analysis of e-cigarette cartridges by the US Food and Drug Administration detected tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs), which are known carcinogens. The four primary TSNAs detected were N-nitrosonicotine (NNN), N-nitrosoanabasine (NAB), N-ntrosoanatabine (NAT), and 4-(methylntrisoamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK).

Toxicologist Maciej L. Goniewicz and colleagues at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo found six toxic substances in e-cigarettes using a robotic smoking machine at levels 9 to 450 times greater than found in regular cigarette smoke, including the toxic carbonyl compounds formaldehyde, acetaldehdye, and acrolein.

E-Cigarettes Contain Additional Contaminants

The levels of glycerol and propylene glycol vaporized in e-cigarettes generally is recognized as safe, but there are other chemicals delivered by the products.

Goniewicz's team detected cadmium, lead, and nickel in e-cigarette vapor. The metals are not found in tobacco cigarettes. Another research team observed actual metal particles in electronic cigarette vapor. The March 10, 2014 volume of Chemical and Engineering News describes Goniewicz's findings in greater detail.

No Regulation

The biggest problem is that the ingredients in e-cigarettes are not regulated or monitored as closely as other drugs. While one brand may be free of certain contaminants, it might be found in another product. The dose of the contaminants also depends on how the user vapes, since frequent short puffs draw a different chemical composition than deep pulls. While it is clear bystanders are exposed to nicotine from e-cigarettes, it is uncertain how well the other contaminants travel and what risks are associated with secondhand vapor. The reader is advised to review the peer-reviewed studies to see which contaminants have been detected in which products.

res : Kalau dia punya konsep tentang ekonomi, maka APBN tidak terus menerus defisit pada masa jabatannya. Selama masa kekuasaannya hutang luar negergi bertambah banyak (US$ 270 miliar). Jumlah ini seimbang dengan jumlah hutang yang ditinggalkan mantan presiden, jenderal haji Muhammad Soeharto.

Kemuajuan ekonomi terkait dengan korupsi, jadi tentunya juga paling tidak kasus Bank Century sudah cerah penjelesaiannya, tetapi hasilnya nihil selain jual bualan dibawah sinar purnama. Disamping kasus Bank Century ada juga kasus panen korupsi mantan boss Jenderah, presiden NKRI bernama alm Haji Muhammad Soeharto. Jumlah hasil panen Soeharto diperkirakan oleh Badan Perserikatan Bangsa-Bangsa (UN StAR) berjumlah kurang lebih US$ 30,—miliar.

Kita lihat saja apakah mereka yang akan menduduki kursi kekuasaan negara nan empuk dan banyak berkat akan mengutik dan mampu menyelesaikan kasus Bank Century dan panen curian harta milik rakyat oleh Haji Muhammad Soeharto.

VIVAnews - Mohammad Jumhur Hidayat mengaku tak menyesal dipecat oleh Presiden Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono dari jabatannya sebagai Kepala Badan Nasional Penempatan dan Perlindungan Tenaga Kerja Indonesia (BNP2TKI) karena mendukung calon presiden dair PDI Perjuangan, Joko Widodo. Karena bukan orang dari partai politik, Jumhur menilai memiliki kebebasan memberikan dukungan terhadap capres tertentu.

"Saya tidak menyesal dipecat sebagai Kepala BNP2TKI karena langkah yang ditempuh sesuai dengan hati nurani saya," kata Jumhur di Yogyakarta, Kamis 20 Maret 2014.

Menurut dia, berbagai permasalahan yang menimpa TKI selama ini karena Indonesia tidak punya kemandirian ekonomi. Selain itu, kata dia, selama dua periode SBY tak punya konsep kemandirian ekonomi sehingga jumlah TKI semakin banyak dan persoalan pun semakin rumit.

"Kenapa saya tak sejalan lagi dengan SBY, karena pemerintah SBY tak punya konsep kemandirian ekonomi ke depan. Salah satu dampaknya jumlah TKI akan semakin banyak," kata Jumhur.

Kata Jumhur, jika pemerintah punya konsep kemandirian ekonomi, semua kebutuhan pangan tidak perlu impor, maka ada semangat dari masyarakat untuk bekerja menggarap potensi alam yang dimiliki bangsa ini.

"Permasalahan TKI sebenarnya karena tak ada kemandirian ekonomi yang dipegang teguh oleh pemerintahan SBY. Bahkan ada kesan SBY disetir oleh para pengusaha," ucapnya.

"Kalau sudah liberal maka semua yang punya modal akan menggilas orang kecil dan akan selalu tergantung pemodal asing," dia menambahkan.

Jumhur berharap dengan konsep kemandirian ekonomi yang ditawarkan PDI Perjuangan dan nantinya akan dilaksanakan Jokowi jika terpilih menjadi presiden, maka jumlah TKI baik yang illegal maupun legal akan berkurang.

"Maka harus dikawal janji dan konsep kemandirian ekonomi yang diterapkan PDIP jika nantinya PDIP berkuasa," kata Jumhur. (sj)

VIVAnews - Presiden Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono menghadiri silaturahmi dengan keluarga besar veteran Bali di Taman Pujaan Bangsa (TPB) Margaranan, Tabanan, Bali, Minggu 23 Maret 2014. Dalam kesempatan itu, Presiden menggugah kembali spirit nasionalisme dan patriotisme warga negara Indonesia.

Menurutnya, semangat kepahlawanan pejuang kemerdekaan di Bali sebagaimana yang dilakukan pahlawan nasional I Gusti Ngurah Rai dan pejuang lainnya harus menjadi warisan spirit untuk menumbuhkan semangat nasionalisme dan patriotisme warga negara.

Di hadapan ratusan veteran pejuang kemerdekaan, Jenderal Purnawirawan TNI ini mengungkapkan dirinya adalah bagian dari keluarga besar veteran. Sebagai keluarga besar veteran, dalam dirinya juga mengalir darah militer yang memiliki komitmen untuk memegang teguh sumpah militer (prajurit TNI) untuk senantiasa memastikan tetap berdiri tegaknya kedaulatan NKRI.

"Nasionalisme dan patrionisme dengan cinta bangsa dan Tanah Air. Kedaulatan Indonesia harus tetap tegak berdiri. Tidak boleh satu jengkal tanah (wilayah NKRI) yang digangu oleh siapa pun. Itulah hakekat nasionaloisme dalam situasi perang," kata Presiden SBY.

Menurut dia, konsesus dasar bangsa ini yakni Pancasila, UUD 1945, NKRI, Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, harus tetap tegak berdiri. "Tidak boleh siapapun mengganggu dan merongrongnya," kata Yudhoyono.

Ditambahkan Presiden SBY, nasionalisme dan patriotisme dewasa ini, hendaknya dimanifestasikan sesuai konteks dan dinamika kehidupan berbangsa dan bernegara. Keduanya dapat diwujudkan dengan mengisi pembangunan, memajukan perekonomian, meningkatkan kesejateraan rakyat, menciptakan keamanan, terwujudnya relasi hidup yang harmoni dan berkeadilan sosial.

"Mengembangkan pariwisata Bali untuk kesejahteraan, itu juga bentuk pelaksanaan nasionalisme," katanya.

Pada kesempatan itu, Presiden Yudhoyono mengucapkan terima kasih dan penghragaan atas jasa pahlawan Bali yang telah berjuang hingga tetes darah terakhir di medan tempur untuk mewujudkan Indonesia merdeka.

"Bangga dengan yang telah dilakukan pahlawan di Bali. (Perang) Puputan terjadi di mana-mana. Ada di mana-mana. Kita beri penghargaan kepada pejuang Bali," katanya.

Ia mengajak semua komponen masyarakat untuk menghormati jasa pahlawan bangsa. Bangsa yang besar, kata Yudhoyono, adalah bangsa yang menghormati pahlawan.

"Kita berdiri di sini, di tempat sejarah ini sebagai ucapan terima kasih dan pengharagaan," katanya lagi.

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Gubernur DKI Jakarta Joko Widodo memulai tugasnya sebagai calon presiden sekaligus juru kampanye Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan. Di depan simpatisan PDIP di Jakarta Barat, Jokowi mengingatkan kader partai agar memenangi Pemilu Legislatif 2014.

"Apakah PDIP siap masuk ke Istana?," kata Jokowi saat berpidato di Gelanggang Olahraga Cendrawasih, Cengkareng, Jakarta Barat, Ahad, 16 Maret 2014. Jokowi lalu melanjutkan pidatonya, "Apakah banteng siap masuk Istana," merujuk pada logo PDIP berupa banteng gemuk.(baca juga: Jokowi Minta Restu Warga Jadi Capres )

Jokowi mengulang proses penunjukkannya sebagai calon presiden PDIP oleh Megawati Soekarnoputri. Jokowi mengatakan, sekitar pukul 14.25 WIB dia diberitahu dan menyampaikan siap melaksanakan mandat tersebut. Namun Jokowi mengingatkan, "Tanpa dibantu relawan dan simpatisan, pekerjaan ini tak akan mudah dan sangat berat."

Jokowi meminta kader PDIP berkonsentrasi menghadapi pemilu legislatif. Jokowi menekankan kepada kadernya agar mengajak tetangga datang ke tempat pemungutan suara dan memilih partainya. Tak hanya tetangga setingkat RT, Jokowi meminta tetangga yang diajak meliputi kelurahan. Tak hanya itu, Jokowi juga meminta kadernya mengantisipasi berbagai kecurangan usai pencoblosan. Karena itu, semua kader diinstruksikan untuk mengamankan tempat pemungutan suara masing-masing. Semua saksi, kata dia, juga diminta untuk bersiaga dan mengawal perolehan suara. "Kelihatannya ada yang mau curang," ujar dia.(baca: Kampanye, Jokowi Kutip Ucapan Soekarno)

Dedy Priatmojo, Syahrul Ansyari – Scores of demonstrators from the Alternative Political Committee (KPA) and the People's Liberation Party (PPR) held a demonstration in front of the General Election Commission (KPU) offices in Central Jakarta on Thursday March 13, where they trampled on pictures of political figures including Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo or "Jokowi".

On of the protesters, Surya said that Jokowi does not originate from the movements. He said that the track record of the former mayor of the Central Java city of Solo is problematic because he has failed to provide decent wages to workers.

"Jokowi has only played a role in the administrative and management sector, not in any substantial area", said Surya.

Jokowi, continued Surya, has become popular because all of the current political figures are old establishment figures. Although Jokowi is a new arrival on the national political scene, the demonstrators said that it is not yet clear if he is any good and whether he will work for the ordinary people.

"Jokowi is just a puppet. If he wants to be courageous he should be against foreign [domination of the economy] and give workers decent wages", he exclaimed.

Surya and his colleagues are also critical of the 2014 legislative and presidential elections because they are overly dominated by pro-capitalist issues.

He also criticised several figures and leaders from the political parties, one of which was Greater Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) patron and presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto. "It was with ease that he formed a [political] party yet he has been embroiled in human rights cases", he said. (ren)
