Open letter to Ban-ki Moon

This article is an open letter to UN Secretary General Ban-ki Moon. It is a plea to the head of the UN and its agencies to support the call to save thousands of Filipina housemaids who come to work in this region with no guarantees to ensure their safety, welfare and sometimes survival.

Dear head of the UN,
The aim of this article is to condemn and express my deepest regret for all kinds of abuses against Filipino domestic laborers in the Gulf region. As a human rights activist and a Kuwaiti citizen, I believe there is an urgent need to revise regulations to protect Filipina domestic workers and their civil and human rights.

Due to the increase in crimes against these ladies, I have an ethical obligation to call on all human rights agencies and organizations to urge the Philippine government to stop sending their female citizens to this part of the world as housemaids until new procedures applied. I understand governments send their citizens to work abroad as a source of income, but this should not be at the expense of their dead bodies.

In Kuwait, the rate of corruption and the use of influence make it hard for the victims to stand in court against their sponsors. Therefore, the sponsorship system needs to be scrapped and a new system must be applied, taking into account work relations, as a maid's job is not less than any other business relationship.

The current rules now are not only insufficient, but are discriminatory against the maid. In fact, the number of locals who get prosecuted and hanged due to crimes against their female maids are rare compared to the number of maids who get hanged in public due to similar crimes. It is essential that we call on the Philippine government to stop sending their female citizens to suffer and die here.

The new revisions should not only focus on wages but the work atmosphere and the right to have free legal representation at local courts and other official departments.

All female victims are poor and fail to hire attorneys. In most cases, the sponsor knows this gap and uses it to offer money to buy the silence of the victim and send her back home.

Most of these female maids run away from rape, harassment and/or physical and verbal abuse to fall into prostitution.

This letter is a call for the UN to support this humane plea to urgently save and protect the humanity of those poor ladies.

Regards, Muna Al-Fuzai
