TNI denies intimidation of journalists

Diponegoro Military Command spokesman Col. Ramses L Tobing has denied the allegation that journalists covering the Cebongan trial had been intimidated by the defendants' team of lawyers.

"It would be suicidal for the Army to intimidate journalists. There are no lawyers named Rio or Gilang on lawyers' team," Ramses said on Wednesday.

He said the Army would guarantee that there would be no intimidation during the trial. As much as any other stakeholder, he went on, the Army also wanted to see fairness in the trial of Special Forces commandos.

Previously, two men calling themselves Rio and Gilang, who said they represented the commandos, called Tribun Jogja and Kompas journalists and threateningly accused them of making inaccurate reports.

A group of rights activists, including the Yogyakarta Alliance of Indonesian Journalist (AJI) reported the intimidation to the Press Council with the expectation that the latter would investigate who should be held responsible for the intimidation.(dic
