Postscript to Saddam's downfall

Postscript to Saddam's downfall. 50732.jpeg

America was once again knocking on the doors of the Muslim world through its occupation of hapless and helpless Iraq except that the reasons for that ghastly and continuing carnage made no sense even if the paramountcy of America's national interest was duly acknowledged by all those who did the thinking for the Arab and Muslim world and its teeming millions.

Not many people knew that Saddam was a trained lawyer and that his claim over Kuwait was based on sound legal grounds. Kuwait had always been an integral part of Iraq under British rule. It was separated from Iraq by Great Britain because huge oil reserves were discovered under the sand and seabed.

Moreover, even after Kuwait was carved out of Iraq, the new Kuwaiti Assembly overwhelmingly voted for union with Iraq in 1938.

Saddam was by no means comparable to Nasser; therefore his downfall and eventual execution elicited no howls of outrage or outpourings of national grief amongst Iraqis or even the rest of the Arab world. Now he is merely another footnote in Iraqi history quite forgotten within a span of a decade and few years since America's invasion of that ill-starred country.

Despite all personal flaws and weaknesses, Saddam had managed to keep Iraq together for decades with a modicum of economic stability and its corollary, political peace, Can America's handpicked regime in Iraq do the same for any extended period of time after the last of the Marines are gone?

America's stated objective: To make Iraq safe for democracy - had all the aura and appeal of missionary zeal and missive though no one could quite identify the crude considerations that lay beneath it.

Was it the access and control over Kuwaiti oil that was the lynchpin of America's military strategy in the two Gulf wars? Or was the objective- strike at the only stable Arab power that had the gall to defy America - and thereby destroy the last remaining symbol of Arab sovereignty, nationalism and ethnic pride?

Since most of the other Arab states had been badly co-opted and compromised by America, Arabs have been the laughing stock and the butt of jokes from Washington to Vienna. Paradoxically, it was always America - not Uncle Sam - that had pride of place in Arab hearts with its ideas of democracy, free enterprise and individualism.

Alas, that dispensation is a dead letter today as is America's ideological appeal traditionally enshrined in the personalities of George Washington and Abe Lincoln.

The Shah is gone - and with him the tolerant and humane face of Persian Islam that was so open and receptive to Western ideas of modernity and secularism. Now America must grapple with another personality- the seemingly barbaric face of jehadi Islam as represented by the dead hoary Osama Bin Laden and his surviving Afghan cohorts - the Taliban.

America may also be forced to confront the nightmarish prospect of pitting its power and purpose against the Muslim masses from Brunei to Birmingham and the poisonous terrorism that springs from there.

Unwittingly America has locked horns with Arab pride and much of the Muslim world that has not been co-opted by Washington's largesse and strong-arm tactics. Behind the seeming disarray in the Arab world caused by Iraq's successive defeat in the Gulf wars runs a permanent thread of resentment against America's power and purpose as it affects the Islamic world in general and the Middle East in particular.

And with the diminishing of space within the Arab world brought about by the flood of Western goods and ideas invading their once protected markets and ideological enclaves, there is a perception that the effusive Arab and Muslim welcome to America and Americans cannot continue even though Mubarak, Gaddafi and other Arab leaders pretended to the contrary.

There was and is real hostility in the Green Crescent against Uncle Sam and his depredations against Muslim Iraq through its handpicked regime in the new Iraq. The little modernity and liberalism that the Arab world had attained through decades of experience with home-grown socialism is now in danger of being rolled back and capped with another kind of Islam that is totally unpalatable and uncharitable to America and its ragtag coalition of Britons, Australians and other Westerners.

America stands solitary and alone - especially now with the adoption of the doctrine of exceptionalism that affirms its superiority in the comity of nations and arrogates to itself the right to act as a global police power.

Daily America was persuaded to believe that the Arab and Muslim world are its permanent friends by the motley crew of allies and friends who flocked to and were fed in the White House with promises of moolah and munitions in order to find happier hunting grounds back home.

The sagas of King Hussein and General Musharraf are too well documented elsewhere to merit mention here. Suffice to say that everyone got a crumb or a dollop from the White House. So great was the embarrassment felt by these guests at the prospect of going home empty-handed!

The very self-worth and self-esteem of these leaders was indissolubly linked to being appointed, anointed and rewarded by the White House in order to get that iota of legitimacy in the eyes of those who truly mattered in their own countries. These people - certainly not the rank and file of the Arab and Muslim masses - valued American friendship because it resulted in concrete and tangible gains.

The basic, fundamental and underlying flaw in America's foreign policy is the failure to appreciate and accept that the Arab and the rest of the Muslim world cannot be shaped to fit in with America's concept of democracy. Much of the American and European superstructure of democracy is built on a sound economic system; hence the reason for its continuing appeal and success.

On the other hand, the reality of life, especially in its economic aspect, is so bitter and sordid in the Arab world that America is seen as a gilded nation whose vision of the good life is simply eons away and attainable only after several rebirths and reincarnations. That is why the cruel dichotomy between America and the Arab nations - indeed with the rest of the Muslim world!

In the Arab and Muslim world it is almost impossible to rise to any ideal of the good life because the economic means to attain that life simply do not exist. Much of the Arab world outside the West is mired in inertia, languor and apathy because the chronic hunger present there does not allow otherwise.

Indeed, highly motivated criminals can rouse the masses to embark on any great enterprise by simply feeding them properly - something that no elected government has been able to do so far!

The irrational appeal of Osama Bin Laden and his Taliban supporters had found a fertile and receptive ground in the Muslim imagination precisely because the American occupation of Iraq had driven that country into a deeper deprivation than was its usual lot.

Where restraint and compassion were expected of the Great America - violence, mayhem and discord have been sown to compound the misery of the Iraqi people.

That is why the entire Muslim world, barring its Westernized leaders and elites, stands united against America - the Great Satan!

Sensible Arab and other Muslim leaders who were sensitive to the Western liberal pulse had desperately tried from time to time to arrive at some democratic arrangement within their own countries.

The Shah's offer of a constitutional monarchy in Iran, Marshall Ayub Khan's basic democracy in Pakistan and Sukarno's guided democracy in Indonesia were some notable concessions made by these leaders to the very great demand for democracy made by the West.

However, these leaders could not garner support for their regimes from the West even though they were radical departures from previous institutions and great improvements as well!

Hence the resultant lopsided confrontation between America and the Arab world over the former's handling of post-Saddam Iraq. Nothing more would have more pleased the Muslim masses of the Green Crescent than to see America retreat into isolationism behind its own ocean boundaries and thereby end the sufferings of the people of Iraq.

[batavia-news] Meet Pakistan's Burka Avenger

ISLAMABAD: Wonder Woman and Supergirl now have a Pakistani counterpart in the pantheon of female superheroes — one who shows a lot less skin.

Meet Burka Avenger: a mild-mannered teacher with secret martial arts skills who uses a flowing black burka to hide her identity as she fights local thugs seeking to shut down the girls' school where she works.

Sadly, it's a battle Pakistanis are all too familiar with in the real world.

The Taliban have blown up hundreds of schools and attacked activists in Pakistan's northwest because they oppose girls' education. The militants sparked worldwide condemnation last fall when they shot Malala Yousafzai, a 15-year-old schoolgirl activist, in the head in an unsuccessful attempt to kill her.

Action in the "Burka Avenger" cartoon series, which is scheduled to start running on Geo TV in early August, is much more lighthearted. The bungling bad guys evoke more laughter than fear and are no match for the Burka Avenger, undoubtedly the first South Asian ninja who wields books and pens as weapons.

The Urdu language show is the brainchild of one of Pakistan's biggest pop stars, Aaron Haroon Rashid — known to many as simply Haroon — who conceived of it as a way to emphasize the importance of girls' education and teach children other lessons, such as protecting the environment and not discriminating against others. This last point is critical in a country where Islamist militants wage repeated attacks on religious minorities.

"Each one of our episodes is centered around a moral, which sends out strong social messages to kids," Rashid told The Associated Press in his first interview about the show. "But it is cloaked in pure entertainment, laughter, action and adventure."

The decision to clothe the superhero in a black burka — also often spelled burqa, a full-length robe commonly worn by conservative Islamic women in Pakistan and Afghanistan — could raise eyebrows because some people view the outfit as a sign of oppression. The Taliban forced women to wear burkas when they took control of Afghanistan in the 1990s.

The version worn by the Burka Avenger shows only her eyes and fingers — though it has a sleeker, more ninjalike look than the bulky robes of an actual burka.

Rashid, who is certainly no radical Islamist, said he used a burka to give a local feel to the show, which is billed as the first animated series ever produced in Pakistan.

"It's not a sign of oppression. She is using the burka to hide her identity like other superheroes," said Rashid. "Since she is a woman, we could have dressed her up like Catwoman or Wonder Woman, but that probably wouldn't have worked in Pakistan."

The series is set in Halwapur, a fictional town nestled in the soaring mountains and verdant valleys of northern Pakistan. The Burka Avenger's true identity is Jiya, whose adopted father, Kabbadi Jan, taught her the karate moves she uses to defeat her enemies. When not garbed as her alter ego, Jiya does not wear a burka, or even a less conservative headscarf over her hair.

The main bad guys are Vadero Pajero, a balding, corrupt politician who wears a dollar sign-shaped gold medallion around his neck, and Baba Bandook, an evil magician with a bushy black beard and mustache who is meant to resemble a Taliban commander.

Caught in the middle are the show's main child characters: Ashu and her twin brother Immu and their best friend Mooli, who loves nothing more than munching on radishes in the company of his pet goat, Golu.

In the first episode, Pajero wants to shut down the girls' school in Halwapur so he can pocket the money that a charity gave him to run it. He finds a willing accomplice in Bandook, whose beliefs echo those of the Taliban and many other men in conservative, Islamic Pakistan.

"What business do women have with education?" says Bandook. "They should stay at home, washing, scrubbing and cleaning, toiling in the kitchen."

Bandook padlocks the gate of the school and orders the crowd of young girls outside to leave. Ashu steps forward to resist and delivers a defiant speech about the importance of girls' education — perhaps marking her as a future activist.

"The girls of today are the mothers of tomorrow," says Ashu. "If the mothers are not educated, then future generations will also remain illiterate."

Bandook is unmoved, but the Burka Avenger appears and fights off the magician's henchmen with martial arts moves reminiscent of the movie The Matrix. Using his magical powers, Bandook disappears in a puff of smoke. The Burka Avenger hurls a flying pen that breaks open the padlock on the school's gate as the children cheer.

The show, which is slickly animated using high-powered computer graphics, does a good job of mixing scenes that will entertain children with those that even adults will find laugh-out-loud funny.

In one episode, Bandook builds a robot to take over the world's major cities, including London, New York and Paris. As he outlines his dastardly plan with a deep, evil laugh, one of his minions butts in and says, "But how will we get visas to go to all those places?" — a reference to how difficult it can be for Pakistanis to travel, given their country's reputation.

A group of orphans who were provided an early screening of the first episode at an orphanage on the outskirts of Islamabad laughed and cheered as the Burka Avenger vanquished her enemies.

Ten year-old Samia Naeem said she liked the crusading heroine "because she saved kids' lives, she motivated them for education and school."

Rashid, the pop star, funded much of the program himself, but also had help from an outside donor who preferred not to be credited.

He leveraged his musical background in the process. Each of the 13 episodes completed so far contains songs written and performed by him and other major Pakistani rock stars, such as Ali Azmat and Ali Zafar.

Rashid is producing an album of 10 songs and music videos that will be broadcast alongside the show. He has also created a Burka Avenger iPhone game and a fully interactive website that will accompany the show's launch.

In one of the music videos, Rashid and local rap star Adil Omar sing in praise of the Burka Avenger, while standing in front of a pair of colorfully decorated Pakistani trucks festooned with bright lights.

"Don't mess with the lady in black, when she's on the attack," they sing

[batavia-news] Death toll in Parachinar blasts mounts to 57

Death toll in Parachinar blasts mounts to 57

* Ansarul Mujahideen claimed responsibility for the attack

PESHAWAR: The death toll from twin suicide attacks at a busy marketplace in northwest Pakistan has risen to 57, officials said on Saturday.

The Friday attacks at the bazaar in Parachinar, the main town of Kurram tribal district on Pakistan-Afghanistan border, were the deadliest to hit the country during the holy month of Ramazan.

Earlier, officials had put the death toll at 51, and said that 22 of the victims had died instantaneously. "The death toll from the suicide attacks has now risen to 57," a senior administration official in Kurram, Riaz Mehsud, told AFP. "At least 206 people sustained injuries in the attacks and the condition of 14 injured is critical," Mehsud said. "We are still compiling data of the injured people, as many of them had been shifted to Peshawar and Kohat."

Another senior local administration official, Muhammad Asghar Khan, also confirmed the new death toll. The explosions sent handcarts flying as shoppers bought food to open their fasts at sunset. Police spokesman Fazal Naeem Khan told INP that one bomb was believed to have been planted on a motorcycle. The second bomb was detonated about four minutes after the first one, about 400 yards away from the initial blast site, said government official Javed Ali. However, Parachinar administration officials told AFP that both the blasts were carried out by suicide bombers, who walked into the crowded market. "We found many body parts, including parts of the suicide bombers. There was blood and human flesh at the blasts site," Mehsud had said on Friday.

A witness, Amjad Hussain, said a large number of tribesmen were busy shopping mostly for eatables for breaking their fast when the blast took place. "I saw people running for their lives when the first blast took place in one corner of the bazaar. Just then another blast occurred. The next thing I saw was human bodies and the injured lying all over the place," he said. Another local tribesman, Gulfat Hussain, said many people died before they could be shifted to hospital due to lack of immediate medical care. "Announcements were made from loudspeakers in the mosques, appealing to the people to come to hospital and donate blood for the injured people," he said. The area where the bombers struck is mainly inhabited by Shias, but officials said they could not immediately identify the victims. Kurram is frequently the scene of sectarian violence.

The country is battling a Taliban-led domestic insurgency that has killed thousands of civilians and security personnel since 2007. The victims of the twin suicide blasts were laid to rest on Saturday. Markets in Parachinar remained closed, as three days of mourning is being observed.

A previously unknown group called Ansarul Mujahideen claimed responsibility for the attack. "We plan more similar attacks against Shias in Pakistan to seek revenge for the brutalities of Shias against Sunnis in Syria and Iraq," Abu Baseer, who identified himself as a spokesman for the group, told Reuters by telephone. agencies

RUU IMIGRASI HOUSE TERMASUK LEGALISASI IMIGRAN GELAP DAN KEWARGANEGARAAN AS
