[batavia-news] Shias targeted again

Shias targeted again

If there is one thing that can be said about the sorry state of things in Pakistan, it is that the more things change, the more they remain the same. The suicide car bomb attack on a bus carrying about 50 Shia pilgrims returning from Iran in the Akhterabad area of Quetta on Wednesday refreshed memories of the devastating bombings on January 11 and February 16, 2013, in which over 200 Shia Hazaras were killed. The perpetrators of those attacks are still at large, arguably nestling within the cosy ranks of the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), an extreme sectarian terrorist group. The province has also witnessed many attacks of the kind that took place on Wednesday on the buses of Shia pilgrims travelling to or from Iran. In response to these incidents, the security establishment had decided in the tenure of the previous government that all buses bearing pilgrims would be given safe conduct through an adequate police escort. The escort however was unable to prevent the bombing on Wednesday, reportedly despite sporting jammers. It is being speculated that the suicide bomber sitting in a vehicle on the roadside that was packed with about 100 kgs of explosives, blew himself up. That raises the question how the security forces intend to overcome the by now well known phenomenon of the terrorists keeping one step ahead of the law enforcement agencies. It will be interesting to know, although there is considerable scepticism whether anything will come of it, how the security forces explain the ability of the suicide bomber to detonate despite the presence of jammers. Clearly, the far more innovative terrorists have managed to find a way around the jammers technology. Two people on the ill fated bus were killed and about 34 injured, including eight women, five children and four security forces personnel. The death toll may rise since some of the injured are in serious condition in hospital. The ritual condemnation of the heinous incident from high to low, including the president, prime minister, governor and chief minister by now do not even serve as balm on the wounds of the victims or their families. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's response to the incident focused precisely on the need to go beyond such condemnation and act to stop the bloodbath of Shias, which has increasingly taken on the colours of a slow genocide. The Hazara community in Quetta has been particularly hard hit by these bloodthirsty killers, although a more pacific and law abiding community would be difficult to find anywhere in Pakistan. The Majlis Wahdat-ul-Muslimeen, Shia Conference and Hazara Democratic Party have announced three days of mourning and given a call for a shutter down strike on Thursday.
A claim of responsibility has surfaced in the media. The perpetrator, Jaish al Islam, says it carried out the attack as revenge against the incident at a madrassa in Rawalpindi on Ashura, an event that seems to have triggered a tit-for-tat killing spree of Shias, first and foremost, and arguably revenge attacks against extremist sectarian Sunni groups on the other. Because the sectarian conflict is a slow burning fuse, there is a danger that complacency will prevent us from seeing that the fuse leads to a powder keg that could yet tear Pakistani society apart at the seams. Considering the claims of responsibility for these dastardly acts by virulently sectarian groups such as LeJ and Jaish al Islam, many of whom are operating openly despite the 'bans' on them, often with a change of nomenclature, it is beyond comprehension how LeJ leader Malik Ishaq walks the land a free man. Clearly, there is a paralysis of political will that prevents the state from dealing with these destructive elements in the manner they richly deserve. If the political and security establishments do not wake up to the clear and present danger represented by these obnoxious forces, tomorrow we may have to revise the maxim we began with: in Pakistan, things will no longer remain the same.  *

[batavia-news] President al-Assad: Takfiri extremist mentality is terrorism that knows no borders, has no home

President al-Assad: Takfiri extremist mentality is terrorism that knows no borders, has no home

Dec 23, 2013

Damascus, (SANA) – President Bashar al-Assad on Monday received an Australian solidarity delegation comprising academic figures and activists, headed by Prof. Tim Anderson.

During the meeting, President al-Assad said that what is happening in Syria and the region affects the entire world, because the takfiri extremist mentality Syria is facing is a terrorism that knows no borders and has no home, asserting that it's an international blight that could strike anywhere and at any time.

On relations with the West, President al-Assad said that the problem lies in the double standards employed by some western politicians regarding regional issues and their pursuit of narrow interests in a manner removed from a correct understanding of the reality and nature of what is happening in Syria and the region.

20131223-203628.jpg

The President underlined the importance of visits like this in deepening communication and building cultural bridges among people in order to relay reality as it is and confront attempts of media falsification and misdirection.

For their part, members of the delegation said they will do their best to relay the truth about what they witnessed in Syria, noting that they represent a broad section of the Australian people who support Syria against the multifaceted war targeting it which aims to deplete its people's resources and undermine its integral role in the region.

Assange's Father Met Assad in Damascus

Updated, 8:43 p.m. | Julian Assange's father met with President Bashar al-Assad of Syria during a visit to Damascus last week as a member of "a solidarity delegation," The Australian reported on Monday.

A photograph of the meeting, posted on the Syrian presidency's Twitter feed and released by the state news agency, showed Mr. Assange's biological father, John Shipton, seated two places away from Mr Ass Assad.

John Shipton (WLP CEO), Gail Malone and Jamal Daoud (WLP National Council) were among the first Australian mission of its kind to Syria

A Syrian state television report on the delegation's meetings with senior officials featured comments from Mr. Shipton, who said the visit was intended "to show the solidarity of the Australian people and Wikileaks Party with the difficulties that Syria is … having at the moment."

A video report from Syrian state television on the visit to Damascus by a delegation from Australia that included John Shipton, the chief executive of the Wikileaks Party.

Mr. Assange's father, who bears a striking physical resemblance to his son, also called the courage of the Syrian people "an example to the rest of the world in how to resist this plague of terrorism which is sweeping the Middle East and Central Asia." He added that the Wikileaks Party planned to lend Mr. Assad's government a hand in getting its message out. "We'll continue to expose the truth to the Australian people and to our international audience, and next year we will set up an office in Damascus," Mr. Shipton said.

Another member of the delegation, Gail Malone, wrote during the visit that the group had come "to promote peace and transparency." She also reminded readers that the Wikileaks Party had warned against Western military intervention in Syria "based on unsubstantiated reports of the Syrian Army's use of chemical weapons against Syrian civilians."

Jamal Daoud, a Palestinian-Australian who is also a leader of the Wikileaks Party, reported on Twitter that before leaving Syria the group had traveled to the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, the scene of one of the first large demonstrations against Mr. Assad's dynastic rule in the Syrian capital in 2011.

We visited Ommayed Mosque in Damascus today.... Peace and victory for Syrians...

[batavia-news] Two Australians die in Bali

Two Australians die in Bali

Date January 5, 2014 - 8:16AM

Mother and daughter die in Bali

Holiday turns to tragedy as a Queensland mother and daughter die after falling violently ill at a Bali hotel. Nine News.

A Sunshine Coast mother and her teenage daughter have died in Bali in the early hours of Saturday after the pair became violently ill less than a day after starting their holiday on the island.

A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesman confirmed the tragedy on Saturday evening, stressing that the distraught family had asked for privacy.

A spokesman said the Australian consulate-general in Bali was liaising with local authorities.

He said the pair, Noelene Bischoff, 54, and her daughter, Yvan Jeana Yuri Bischoff, were from Queensland.

Police sources said the mother, a Sunshine Coast health professional, and her teenage daughter checked in to their beachfront resort on Bali's east coast on Friday.

Early on Saturday morning the girl asked staff at the Padang Bai Beach Resort for help, telling them she and her mother had fallen sick.

The pair were taken by private ambulance to a nearby medical centre but about 1.45am local time the mother died, according to local sources.

The girl was rushed to BIMC Hospital, an international clinic in the Balinese capital of Denpasar. Despite still being conscious and able to speak to doctors on arrival at the hospital she could not be saved.

The bodies are now at Sanglah Hospital awaiting autopsy, one police source said.

''Checking the scene, we found lots of medicine,'' he said.

''We can't confirm the cause of death yet.''

Another senior local police source says the treating doctor at the first clinic suspected a food allergy.

''What kind of food, we don't know,'' he said.

''All the medicines are from abroad.

''The vomit and medicines have been taken to forensic laboratory.''

DFAT says the Australian Consulate-General in Bali is liaising with local authorities and the government is providing consular assistance to the family in Australia.

The DFAT spokesman would not confirm reports from Australia that the mother and daughter had died as a result of food poisoning but did say that the department was providing consular assistance to the family in Australia.

[batavia-news] Religion on IDs needed to prevent 'unlawful' marriage: Official

res : Orang mau kawin bersenam  bersenang-senang... apakah agama memainkan peranan peting? NKRI dengan rezim neo-Mojopahitnya  harus ditinggalkan, karena merugikan,  masalah taik kucing yang direpotkan. Kalau kesejahteraan tidak bisa dijamin apalagi surga!

Religion on IDs needed to prevent 'unlawful' marriage: Official

Deputy Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar defended on Friday the controversial decision to keep religious affiliation listed on every citizen's identification card, saying it was important for preventing unlawful interfaith marriages.

"Elimination of religion on ID cards would bring more detriments than benefits," Nasaruddin said, as quoted on the ministry's website. "A Muslim marriage, for example, would be considered illegal under fiqih [Islamic law] if the groom did not know the religion of his bride. The child of such a marriage would be called a zina [illegitimate] child," he added.

The House of Representatives recently approved an amendment to the 2006 Civil Administration Law that retains provisions on the inclusion of the "religion" column on ID cards and the prohibition of adherents of indigenous faiths to state their beliefs on the cards.

Activists have said that the amendment would perpetuate rampant, years-long discrimination against minorities.

But Nasaruddin insisted the regulation would instead positively contribute to the improvement of public services. "It will not discriminate those with religions outside Islam, such as Catholic, Protestant, Hindu, Buddhism and Confucianism," he said.

Previously, Jakarta Deputy Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama, who is a Christian of Chinese descent, expressed his objection to the inclusion of religion on identity cards.

He said he personally did not like that religion was listed on his ID card because faith was a personal matter.

Ahok said that many countries in the world, even Malaysia, which is known as an Islamic country, did not include religion on their citizens' identity documents.

Currently, the government recognizes only six organized religions: Islam, Protestantism, Catholicism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Confucianism. The last was added in 1999.

Data from the Indonesian Conference on Religion and Peace (ICRP) in 2005 showed that more than 400,000 people follow non-denominational faiths, or Kepercayaan Terhadap Tuhan Yang Maha Esa (Belief in One God), which is not officially recognized by the state.

According to the ICRP, there are around 245 non-denominational faith organizations across the country.

The 2010 census found that 270,000 Indonesians listed "other" as their religion.
