Indonesia's Ambassador to the United States Dino Patti Djalal has resigned from his post to focus on his presidential primary bid, he said on Sunday after participating in first day of the Democratic Party's convention to select its 2014 candidate.

Dino, a civil servant for nearly three decades, filed his resignation letter with Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa.

"The letter has been processed," he said.

The ambassador will run against 10 other candidates for the support of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's Democratic Party in the 2014 presidential election. The struggling party opened its selection process to outsiders after a series of high-profile graft cases decimated its upper ranks. The move is widely seen as an effort to rejuvenate the party's ranks and bolster support ahead of the election season.

Dino told the packed room at the Hotel Grand Sahid Jaya, in Jakarta, that he hoped to modernize Indonesian politics.

"I'm not here to apply for a job," he said. "Win or lose, it doesn't matter. I'm not the type of person who thirsts for power. [I care] more about achievement. I will be a [candidate] who initiates the modernization of politics."

The 48-year-old previously told the Jakarta Globe that he could "bring a youthful spirit and fresh ideas that [will] be relevant for Indonesia's success in the 21st century," to the Democratic Party. But the ambassador's new-found interest in politics has ruffled feathers in the House of Representatives.

"As a civil servant, Dino is bound by his pledge when he was inaugurated, which is not to take part in politics like he is doing right now," Tubagus Hasanuddin, chief deputy of the House commission on foreign affairs, said last week.

Dino said he had every intention of vacating his post to focus on the convention.

"I have stated that I am willing to leave my post as a civil servant," he said.

Two other civil servants, Trade Minister Gita Wirjawan and State-Owned Enterprises Minister Dahlan Iskan, are participating in the convention.
