Prabowo Allies Declare 'Permanent Coalition' but Ties Look Temporary to Others
Jakarta. Seven political parties supporting presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto signed an agreement on Monday binding them to his "Merah Putih" coalition for the next five years — but a senior lawmaker maintained that the memorandum was worthless and that parties would still jump ship to his rival Joko Widodo, who was pronounced the winner of last week's election by most observers.
"Today, the Merah Putih coalition inked history," chairman of the Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) party Suhardi said. "We will run out of time if the parties are segregated, we will waste five years at the parliament only to argue. With this coalition, the government will run efficiently."
The agreement was signed by all seven parties' chairmen and representatives — including the Democratic Party.
Suhardi said that the coalition had already established clear programs on food self-sufficiency, energy, education and corruption eradication.
"This coalition is ready to prosper," he said. "The laws will be painstakingly drafted so the president and vice president will run the government in an efficient and perfect way. The Merah Putih coalition is ready to run the government's programs."
