Borobudur Temple security tightened: Police

The police will maintain tighter security around the world's largest Buddhist temple in Borobudur in Magelang, Central Java, following Sunday's bombing of the Ekayana Vihara in West Jakarta, Central Java Police chief Insp. Gen. Dwi Priyanto has said.

Speaking to The Jakarta Post in the provincial capital Semarang on Tuesday, Dwi said that the police would deploy personnel both in uniform and in plain clothes for the purpose.

"This is our form of preventive measure. Other houses of worship will also get similar tighter security measures," he said.

He added that amid its tight schedule securing the Idul Fitri exodus traffic the police also had the task of monitoring houses of worship in their respective jurisdictions.

This explained why the police had also involved community and religious leaders as well as interfaith organizations to take part in maintaining security in their respective neighborhoods, he said

Separately Pastor Rahmat Paskah Rajaguguk of the Semarang Gereformeerd Indonesian Christian Church said that no special security measures had been applied in his church.

"It's just as usual. When there is a service, we have a policeman guarding us. On normal days we only have our own satpam [security guards]," he said.

Meanwhile the situation at the Buddhagaya Vihara compound in Watugong, Banyumanik, Semarang, appeared normal following the West Jakarta bombing. However the security guards have been given the new task of recording visitors' identities, something that they have not previously done.
