TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Negeri Peperu community in Saparua, indigenous to Central Maluku, plans to report the Maluku Diving and Tourism company to the court. The community says the tourism company owned by Kurt Walter Gross, a man from Switzerland, has robbed the people of their sea. The community also said the company has often intimidated the locals.
In a press release dated Thursday, August 1, the Indigenous Peoples' Alliance of the Archipelago (AMAN) said the robbery of their cultural territory began in 2007 when Maluku Diving and Tourism began its construction of the Cape Paperu Resort and Spa. The situation worsened in 2008.
Aside from that, military men and police officers also participated in intimidating and terrorizing the people of Negeri Paperu.
AMAN's Patricia Wattimena said the Tanjung Paperu land plot, also known as Tanjung Souino, has caused the locals to lose their main source of income. These locals have depended on their catches in the sea from generation to generation to survive.
AMAN lease regional chief, Clif Kissya, said the Maluku Diving and Tourism company has violated the rights of the indigenous people. The company only has a contract on land so it does not have the right to claim the sea.
AMAN Maluku's chief, Yohanes Balubun, said the Paperu community insists on taking this matter to court because they see no good will for negotiations from the company. He also regrets the Maluku province administration's attitude that seems to lean more towards the company. MAHARDIKA SATRIA HADI
