Suryadharma Named Suspect in Hajj Fund Graft Investigation
Jakarta. The Corruption Eradication Commission on Thursday evening named Religious Affairs Minister and United Development Party (PPP) chairman Suryadharma Ali a suspect in an investigation into alleged corruption in the management of the government hajj fund in 2012 and 2013.
"The status of the case has been increased to 'investigation,' and [Suryadharma] and some others have been named suspects," KPK deputy chairman Busyro Muqoddas said.
He provided no further details.
Deputy Justice and Human Rights Minister Denny Indrayana said his ministy had placed a six-month travel ban on Suryadharma at the KPK's request, effective immediately.
KPK chairman Abraham Samad on Monday said that he would soon implicate a "top national official" in the case.
"You can figure out who is most responsible in the hajj sector," he said, hinting at Suryadharma, who oversaw the fund.
Investigators have questioned several Religious Affairs Ministry officials, including Suryadharma, hajj director general Anggito Abimanyu and secretary general Bahrul Hayat.
Lawmakers Jazuli Juwaini and Hasrul Azwar — members of House of Representatives' Commission VIII, which oversees religious affairs — have also faced questioning.
More than 200,000 Indonesians make the hajj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia each year — a mammoth logistical challenge that falls under the purview of the Religious Affairs Ministry.
The antigraft commission sent a team to Mecca last year to observe hajj management directly.
Suryadharma has led the Islamic-based United Development Party (PPP) since 2007 and has served as religious affairs minister since 2009.
He has faced criticism for inaction on issues of religious intolerance and struggled with a major rift within the PPP over his declared support for Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto.
In November of 2013, he called on the minority Ahmadiyah Muslim group to disband in order to avoid intolerance.
