Democratic Party Names Dahlan Iskan Convention Winner
Jakarta. After months of uncertainty, the Democratic Party on Friday named State-Owned Enterprises Minister Dahlan Iskan the winner of the party's convention to nominate a presidential candidate.
According to the results of the latest National Survey Media (Median) released on Friday shortly before the official announcement, Dahlan topped the Democratic popularity list with 17.8 percent, ahead of the other 10 contenders.
"The winner is Dahlan Iskan," said Maftun Basyuni, head of the convention committee, as quoted by Detik.com. "According to our survey, Dahlan has the highest numbers."
Maftuh declined to name the next-place candidates.
The official results of the April 9 legislative elections placed the struggling Democratic Party at 10.19 percent of popular vote, far below its 21 percent it secured in the 2009 elections.
President and party chairman Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono expressed his disappointment over the final results and called on the party to have realistic expectations over its ability to nominate a presidential candidate.
"The Democrats knows its limit," Yudhoyono said at the State Palace on Friday. "With 10 percent of votes, we cannot do much."
Under Indonesian law, a party or coalition must win 25 percent of the legislative vote or 20 percent of seats in the House of Representatives in order to field a candidate.
The party has yet to enter a formal coalition deal with any other parties.
