Poso Police Station Target of Suicide Bomb Attack
A man detonated a suicide bomb outside a Poso Police mosque following a morning ceremony on Monday in the latest attack against law enforcement in this restive Central Sulawesi district, police said.
The unidentified man, allegedly a member of the East Indonesia Mujahidin, sped past security on a motorcycle and detonated several bombs outside the police headquarters' At Taqwa Mosque, Central Sulawesi Police Chief Brig. Gen Ari Dono said. A nearby construction worker was injured in the blast. The bomber died.
"No police officers were hurt," Ari said. "There is a construction worker who was injured. This is a terrorism act. We are investigating the origin of his motorcycle."
Police described the man as in his 30s with a thin mustache and beard. It is likely the suicide bomber was affiliated with fugitive terrorist leader Santoso.
"There is a big possibility that this is related to him [Santoso]," Ari said. "Our officers are still trying to settle the case including searching for the identity of the bomber and who helped him."
Anti-terrorism forces have waged a campaign against terrorist cells in Poso, a district plagued by more than a decade of sectarian violence. Indonesia's homegrown terrorist organizations have focused their increasingly sophisticated efforts on Poso, with local leaders running training camps in Central Sulawesi and affiliated members committing armed robberies in Java to fund the import of weapons and expertise from the Philippines.
Santoso himself is believed to run a training camp outside Poso and has issued a letter openly challenging police.
Poso was home to a series of Christian-Muslim attacks in the early 2000s as radical hard-liners converged on predominately Christian villages in a wave of religiously motivated violence. The region's sectarian violence has lessened in recent years, but the district remains a hotbed of domestic terrorism, police said.
