Central Java Police Arrest Noodle Producer for Using Formaldehyde
Jakarta. Police in Semarang, Central Java, confiscated 800 kilograms of noodles containing formaldehyde on Sunday from a producer in Magelang. .
Central Java special crimes chief Sr. Comr. Djoko Purbohadijoyo said the products made with formalin, a diluted form of formaldehyde, were wrapped in up to 16 different sacks when discovered by officials.
"The noodles were ready to be distributed to the Sukoharjo area," he said, in a report by state-run Antara news agency.
Police have named a suspect and detained a 38-year-old man identified as A.D., alleged to be the producer of the noodles. The suspect. is understood to be from the Bagonan area of Sukorejo village.
Formalin is an aqueous form of formaldehyde, a known carcinogen. The substance is often illegally used as a preservative in several food items such as chicken, fish, noodles and tofu in Indonesia.
A.D. said he has been running his business for six months, ordering the formalin from a supplier who would deliver the chemical to his premises, police said.
"We are currently investigating the person who supplies the formalin," Djoko said.
