Only 1% of plantation land belongs to state: BPN

The National Land Agency (BPN) says that the Indonesian government owns only 1 percent of the country's total land area covered by plantations, as private companies have come to dominate the industry.

"We have a total of 120 million hectares in plantation area but the government only controls 1.2 million hectares," BPN land director Noor Marzuki said in Jakarta on Thursday as quoted by kompas.com.

Marzuki said the state's share had diminished as private domestic and foreign companies scooped up more land.

He also said that only 30 percent of all plantation area had been registered with the BPN, meaning the remaining 70 percent was prone to mismanagement. (nfo)
