Shanghai demonstrators demand cleaner air
Argentina Star Sunday 12th May, 2013
Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Shanghai on Saturday to protest against the city's worsening pollution problem.
Protesters said the high levels of pollution were enough for the government to drop plans for a lithium battery factory in the city.
Police kept a watchful eye on large groups as they marched along the city's streets.
However, the peaceful march proceeded without any arrests.
There is growing social tension over the high levels of pollution creeping into many communities in China.
Protests by residents have been growing in recent months.
Recently, the mayor of the city of Kunming went along with a majority of residents who said they were against the opening of a chemical refinery.
The mayor said he would not permit the project to go ahead
