"Yanukovych is Ukraine's only legitimate president," he said on live television on March 4 in his first comments on the crisis since the ousting of the pro-Russian ex-leader.
"There can only be one assessment of what happened in Kiev and Ukraine as a whole - this was an anti-constitutional takeover and armed seizure of power."
Putin also said that Russia will only use force as "last resort," but reserves the right to use 'all means' to protect citizens in Ukraine.
His statement comes amid a dramatic escalation of the situation in the crisis-hit country vafter months of protests, mainly in Kiev.
Russia has taken effective control of the Crimean peninsula after counter-rallies were organized against the new authorities, raising concerns that it might seek to expand its control by seizing other parts of eastern Ukraine.
