No Golkar–PDI-P coalition: Aburizal

Golkar Party chairman and presidential hopeful Aburizal Bakrie has ended the chances of a coalition with the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) by saying that both parties would nominate their own presidential candidates.

He said on Saturday that although he and Jakarta Governor Joko "Jokowi" Widodo agreed to remain peaceful during the presidential race, they would not be running mates for the July 9 election.

"Jokowi and I agreed to create a peaceful election in the upcoming presidential election but what is certain is that Golkar and the PDI-P will nominate their own presidential candidates," Aburizal said in a press conference following a meeting with Jokowi, as quoted by Kompas.com.

The meeting was also attended by Golkar secretary-general Idrus Marham, PDI-P secretary-general Tjahjo Kumolo, Golkar's election division head Cicip Sutardjo and a number of Golkar executives.

He said that both parties agreed to support the elected president and would cooperate at the House of Representatives for a better Indonesia.

"Whoever the president will be, we will be friends. We agreed on it in the meeting between the PDI-P and Golkar," he said.

Based on quick count results following the legislative election, the Golkar Party gained between 14.3 percent and 15 percent of the total vote, the second highest after the PDI-P, which topped the tally with between 18.9 percent and 19.2 percent of votes.

A party -- or a coalition of parties -- needs to secure at least 25 percent of the popular vote or 20 percent of seats in the House of Representatives to be eligible to nominate a presidential candidate. (idb/nv
