Democratic Party convention participant Pramono Edhie Wibowo has likened his leadership style to that of Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo, who ever since being mayor to Solo, East Java, has been applauded for his programs and his closeness to his constituents.

After being officially announced as a participant in the convention, Pramono claimed he has been actively conducting visitations (blusukan) of his own, one of Governor Joko's most popular programs in the city.

"Leaders should conduct field trips. Joko is doing the right thing. He gets out and about, meeting people directly," said Pramono, who is a former army chief of staff. "For me, as someone from the military, I am used to doing these types of trips."

He emphasized that conducting field trips was an important way of listening to the people's aspirations, looking at the facts on the field and monitoring whether or not programs have been well implemented.

Pramono was speaking during a biking program at Pasirukem village in Karawang, West Java, on Sunday, as part of the Saan Mustopa Cup volleyball open tournament.

"Since officially announced as a participant of the convention, I have conducted three trips," he announced.

Joko's visitation programs have been receiving criticism from some public officials who claimed the city administration was spending too much of its annual budget on their governor's trips.

Meanwhile, Pramono has yet to announce his vision and mission as a candidate running to become the Democratic Party's presidential candidate next year.

According to him, he will be presenting his visions to the public next Sunday.

Regarding the convention, Pramono underlined that participants have been supportive of each other and were not competitive in such a way that moved them to discourage one another.

"Everyone is of good quality, everyone has the potential, so there is no reason to be putting each other down. We are all in this together for the good of the party, we are supportive of everyone," Pramono said.

As the Democratic Party rolls out its presidential candidate selection process, there have been reports of divisions in the party as members moved to support their own candidates from the 11 names in the running but Pramono moved to rebut such reports, saying the convention is aimed at opening doors for people of quality to lead the nation.

"The convention gives room for people with the potential and quality," he said.

Despite not revealing special strategies for the convention, Pramono said he will be utilizing party members and legislative candidates.

"A party will be big with strong members. In field trips I have worked to utilize the strengths of our members and legislative candidates," he said. Pramono, who is also the brother of first lady Ani Yudhoyono, said he was confident of having enough electability to pass the convention committee's requirement.

"Popularity is also important. In the military, when facing war, we have to be sure. If one is not sure, it is better not to participate. In the convention, [participants are in] war, though a very positive one," he said.

Meanwhile, support for Pramono has been seen around the House of Representatives' complex, with at least three posters with messages of support for him having been put up.

In a report by Tribunnews.com, one poster is reported to read "being a president is not my dream, my dream is to create a peaceful Indonesia.''

According to information on the posters, the move had been initiated by a group of people who named themselves "Wibowo Volunteers."

Tumpal Naibaho, coordinator of the volunteers claimed the group included people from different backgrounds.

"We are not from the Democratic Party or from the DPP [Central Executive Board of the Democratic Party]. We founded this organization so that people who are not members of the party can join [in support of Pramono]," Tumpal said.

The coordinator said he has met with Pramono to discuss the posters.

"We have met. He was surprised to find somebody supporting him, which made us sympathize with him even more," Tumpal said, adding that 12 posters had been spread around Jakarta.

"We will be rolling these out all over Indonesia," he said.

Pramono's family ties with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono have sparked concerns that he would be entitled to special treatment at the convention but the former chief of staff was quick to reject such claims.

"If someone was to rely on their ties with the leader without having real qualities to become the president of Indonesia, it will be very difficult," he said last week.

Pramono is among the 11 people in the running to represent the Democratic Party as its presidential candidate in the 2014 elections.
