Nine West Aceh Inmates Escape in Latest Indonesian Prison Break

Nine inmates at West Aceh's Meulaboh Prison sawed through the prison's bars and escaped in the second jailbreak reported in Indonesia in less than a week, a prison official said on Tuesday.

The prisoners climbed down an eight-meter-tall wall before disappearing into the heavy jungle near the prison early Tuesday morning. Some of the inmates injured themselves by jumping from their cell window, Meulaboh Prison head Sulistiyono said.

Prison officials and local police apprehended six of the escapees hours after their jailbreak. Three others remained at large Tuesday night. Officers said the prisoners were likely hiding in the jungle near the prison.

"We are having difficulties tracking them down in the jungle because we don't have enough personnel [on staff],"  Sulistiyono said. "Some of the officers live far away from the prison. That is why it was quite easy for the inmates to escape."

Most of the escapees were jailed on narcotics-related charges. The prisoners were upset after not receiving sentence cuts in commemoration of Indonesia's Independence Day, Sulistiyono said.

West Aceh Police are investigating the case for possible outside involvement, police chief Sr. Comr. Faisal Rivai said.

"We highly suspect the saw they used to cut down the bars was smuggled into the prison by a visitor," he said.

Jailbreaks are a reoccurring problem at Indonesia's overcrowded prisons, where inmate populations are often hundreds over capacity and staffing is thin. On Friday more than 30 prisoners escaped from North Sumatra's Labuhan Ruku Prison after staging a riot and setting fire to prison offices. Most of the escapees had been returned to the prison by Tuesday, jail officials said.

In July, some 150 inmates, including convicted terrorists, escaped from a prison in Medan. Two days later, 11 prisoners jailed on drug charges staged a similar break at a prison in Batam Island, Riau.
