TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Seven Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) have launched the Bersih 2014 movement as the April 9 legislative election approaches. The movement provides information for voters about legislative candidates that are considered to be clean and eligible, and serves as a guideline on how to identify them on the website http://bersih2014.net/.
The movement was initiated by the Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW), the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras), the Center for Policy and Law Studies (PSHK), the Indonesian Legal Aid Institute Foundation (YLBHI), the Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi), Transparency International Indonesia and Consortium for Agrarian Reform (KPA).
Kontras Coordinator Haris Azhar, said that legislative candidates listed on Bersih 2014 website were dedicated to eradicating corruption, upholding human rights, protecting the environment and guaranteeing the rights of women and other marginal groups. "They are the people who are willing to work for the interest of the people and they are capable of solving problems," he said, adding that "they are ready to be held accountable for their mandate if elected."
Haris said that the Bersih 2014 team had started to observe and supervise the track records of the candidates since October 2013. The website has displayed 60 chosen candidates based on subjective and objective evaluation.
