JAKARTA: Indonesia's elite anti-terrorism squad shot and killed six suspected militants and arrested another amid New Year's Eve celebrations in an all-night standoff at a house near the country's capital, a police spokesman said Wednesday.

Intelligence gathered from earlier arrests allowed police to storm hideouts in Ciputat on Jakarta's outskirts as part of an investigation into an alleged plot to bomb the Myanmar Embassy and a Buddhist temple, said National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Boy Rafli Amar.

The nine-hour-long shootout started late Tuesday when most Indonesians were preparing to celebrate the end of the year and ended Wednesday.

Amar said those killed had refused to surrender and had fired guns and lobbed homemade bombs at security forces, injuring one police officer in his leg.

He said the men were suspected of being part of a larger group involved in robberies used to fund terrorist activities, mainly aimed at police.

They also were linked to terrorist group led by Santoso — on the police's most wanted list — in Poso, a flashpoint of terrorism in Central Sulawesi where a Muslim-Christian conflict killed at least 1,000 people from 1998 to 2002.

''There is a strong indication that they were involved in a series of police killings,'' Amar told reporters, adding police found at least six homemade bombs at the house.

Police were trying to determine whether the men killed in the raid were connected to an alleged plot in May against the Myanmar Embassy to retaliate against Myanmar for attacks on Muslims in that country.

Sectarian violence in Buddhist-majority Myanmar has killed scores of people, and tens of thousands of Muslims have been driven from their homes.

Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, has been battling terrorists since bombings on the resort island of Bali in 2002 killed 202 people, mostly foreign tourists.

Such attacks aimed at foreigners have been largely replaced in recent years by smaller, less deadly strikes targeting the government, mainly police and anti-terrorism forces.

Several residents living in the Kingdom claim to have celebrated New Year's ahead of time and privately to avoid strict monitoring from the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice (Haia).
The commission had warned the public against celebrating New Year, a local newspaper said.
According to the report, the commission has based its warning on a religious decree issued by the Council of Senior Islamic Scholars banning such celebrations.
"New Year's Eve in the Kingdom is just like any other ordinary day," said an Italian teacher living in the Kingdom, who wished to remain anonymous.
She said, "In Italy, we have family and friends get together for a huge feast. Then there's an amusing sight of fireworks at midnight to mark the beginning of the new year.
"We also have public parties and the streets are so lively, just like how the Eid festival is celebrated here."
She said that some of her friends living in her building organized a private party at their compound ahead of the new year due to strict monitoring by the Haia in public areas.
Shanaz Hashmi, a British-Pakistani expatriate living and working in the Kingdom, said that she celebrated the New Year earlier to avoid trouble with the Haia.
"We expected that the Haia would raid public places. So we decided to get together at an early date for a small private celebration among family and friends," she said.
Haia warned that punitive measures would be taken against those who celebrate the New Year publicly. The religious group said it has dispatched its members across the Kingdom to put off public celebrations on New Year, adding that they would not raid houses.
It also warned all shops against selling ornaments that "symbolize or reflect" New Year merriment, adding that violators would be penalized as per the ruling and that their items would be confiscated.

An Indonesia police anti-terrorism squad has shot dead six fighters and arrested another in an all-night standoff at a house near the capital Jakarta, officials said.

Brigadier-General Boy Rafli Amar, a National Police spokesman, said the shootout started late on Tuesday when most Indonesians were preparing for New Year's Eve celebrations and ended Wednesday.

Intelligence gathered from earlier arrests allowed police to storm hideouts in Ciputat on Jakarta's southern outskirts.

He said those who were killed had refused to surrender and instead fired guns and lobbed homemade bombs at security forces, injuring one police officer.

Police spokesman Ronnie Sompie said that they had seized explosive materials and firearms from the house.

Police believe the men are part of a larger group involved in robberies carried out to fund "terrorist activities", mainly aimed at police, and also plan to investigate any links to a plot to bomb the Myanmar Embassy.

Earlier on Tuesday, police arrested a suspected terrorist for his alleged role in a suicide bombing on a police station and fighter training activities.

Most-wanted terrorism suspect

Indonesia's anti-terrorism police squad, Detachment 88, arrested Ato Margono for escorting a suicide bomber to a police station on the island of Sulawesi in June, National Police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar told AFP news agency.

The bomber killed only himself and injured a construction worker with the bomb made of nails.

Margono is linked to the country's most-wanted terrorism suspect, Santoso.

"He was involved in a number of terrorist activities, and he is believed to have shot a villager dead in a separate incident," Amar said.

"The suspect is also accused of carrying out a garage bombing and fundraising to finance terrorist activities"

"He has also worked as a courier for the Santoso network, and is connected with militant training in Poso," he said.

Police have arrested 12 alleged members of the Santoso group this year, Amar said.

About 6,500 police have been deployed in Jakarta and surrounding areas on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day

BANDA ACEH 31 Dis. - Polis Syariah wilayah Aceh merampas beribu-ribu mercun dan trompet kadbod dalam satu serbuan berikutan pengharaman sambutan malam Tahun Baharu, menurut sumber, hari ini.

Serbuan ke gerai-gerai yang menjual barangan itu dilakukan malam tadi berikutan fatwa Majlis Permusyawaratan Ulama Aceh (MPU) yang dikeluarkan pada 24 Disember lalu melarang sambutan itu diadakan dalam wilayah ini.

"Operasi ini dilaksanakan sebelum menjelang malam Tahun Baharu bertujuan memastikan rakyat mematuhi fatwa yang dikeluarkan kerajaan.

"Oleh itu, tidak ada sebarang aktiviti yang akan dibenarkan untuk menyambut kedatangan Tahun Baharu ini," kata pegawai kanan polis Syariah, Reza Kamilin kepada AFP.

Pengharaman sambutan malam Tahun Baharu itu merupakan sebahagian daripada penguatkuasaan undang-undang Syariah di wilayah ini dan dipantau oleh pihak polis Syariah dalam usaha menjaga moral penduduk.

Polis turut mengadakan serbuan di hotel-hotel serta gerai makanan selepas amaran dikeluarkan, kata Reza.

"Polis akan membubarkan sebarang aktiviti perhimpunan. Sesiapa pun yang dilihat bermain bunga api atau trompet, barang-barang itu akan dirampas," katanya.

Beberapa bahagian lain di Aceh dilaporkan turut mengharamkan sambutan Tahun Baharu kerana menganggap orang Islam hanya perlu menyambut kedatangan Maal Hijrah.

Pihak berkuasa Aceh mula melaksanakan undang-undang Syariah pada 2001 yang mengenakan hukuman sebat terhadap pesalah yang ditangkap berjudi atau minum arak. - AFP

The images are shown in a video released Saturday (28) on social networks, showing the same armed men fighting for more than two and a half years to end overthrow the government in Damascus.

This video shows the atrocities committed by terrorists, in particular, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (EIIL) and Al-Nusra Front against Syrian Shia Muslims. Since the beginning of the Syrian conflict, some countries in the region, such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar and other Western nations, including the United States and its allies, have provided both financial and logistical support to armed groups to overthrow the government of Bashar al-Assad.

Last week , the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Western countries now admit that the permanence of Bashar al-Assad in power in Syria is much more convenient than the terrorists that are in the country to fight to seize power.

Previously, Michael Hayden, former head of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and National Security Agency (NSA) in the United States, said the best option to end the crisis in Syria, would be the victory of the Syrian government, and no longer believes in a victory for the terrorists.
These comments show a change in the policy stance of the West over the Syrian crisis, because these countries have lobbied to overthrow Al-Assad from power.

The British consultancy IHS Jane's defense revealed last September that around 100, 000 terrorists backed by Western countries and the region, organized into over a thousand terrorist groups, today have operations in Syria where they are fighting against the government and the nation.

Since mid-March 2011, Syria has been the scene of riots and atrocities carried out by terrorist groups, funded and directed from some Western nations and several countries in the region, with the aim of overthrowing the government.

According to the United Nations (UN), more than 115.000 people have died and a total of 7.8 million people were displaced by the violence in Syria.

PURWOKERTO, (PRLM).-Sebanyak 137 orang tewas akibat gantung diri. Perbuatan nekat para korban untuk mengakhiri hidupnya disebabkan oleh beberapa faktor di antaranya adalah kemiskinan. Berdasarkan data di wilayah Kepolisian Wilayah (Polwil) Banyumas Jawa Tengah (Jateng) meliputi di wilayah Polres Banyumas, Cilacap, Banjarnegara, dan Purbalingga dalam dua tahun terakhir tang tewas akibat gantung diri mencapai 137 orang.

Kepala Polwil Banyumas Kombes Pol HM Gufron didampingi Kepala Bagian Operasional (Kabag Ops) AKBP Budi Meiyanto, Selasa (30/12) mengatakan, jumlah korban bunuh diri pada 2007 angkanya mencapai 74 korban dan pada 2008 jumlahnya menurun menjadi 63 orang. "Jumlah warga yang bunuh diri pada 2008 di wilayah Polres Banyumas, Cilacap, Banjarnegara, dan Purbalingga mencapai 63, ada penurunan dibanding tahun sebelumnya," jelas Kapolwil.

Mengenai motivasi mereka melakukan tindakan nekad dengan mengakhiri hidupnya ada beberapa faktor terbesar putus asa karea menderita penyakit yang tidak kunjung sembuh, kedua alasan ekonomi dan ketiga bunuh diri karena ditinggal pergi istrinya, " Berdasarkan pengalaman saya dinas di beberapa kab/kota seperti Yogyakarta, Klaten dan Surakarta alasan utama bunuh diri adalah ekonomi, namun di Banyumas ternyata sakit telah mendorong banyak orang untuk bunuh diri," kata Kapolwil. Muslim dapat ikut menjaga keamanan dan ketertiban saat perayaan Natal.

JAKARTA – Umat Islam diminta mampu membedakan antara muamalah dan ibadah terkait Natal. Sekretaris Umum Persatuan Islam (Persis) Irfan Safruddin mengatakan, perayaan Natal merupakan ibadah umat Nasrani.

Karena itu, umat Islam mestinya tak menyampaikan ucapan selamat Natal atau merayakan Natal bersama. "Ini merupakan ibadah mereka, kita tak boleh mengikutinya," kata Irfan, Senin (23/12). Sikap ini, ujar dia, sama dengan sikap Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) Pusat.

Dalam hal ini, mesti ada garis yang tegas. Berbeda dengan pengamanan terhadap perayaan Natal. Umat Islam, kata Irfan, boleh ikut serta mengamankan lokasi perayaan. Jangan sampai ada gangguan terhadap mereka saat menjalankan ibadah dalam rangkaian Natal.

Bahkan, kalau seorang Muslim diminta tolong tetangganya yang Nasrani untuk menjaga rumahnya ketika pergi ke gereja merayakan Natal itu tak masalah. Ini bagian dari hubungan baik antarumat beragama. "Kami mendukung," kata Irfan.

Dalam Fatwa MUI pada 7 Maret 1981 dinyatakan, mengikuti upacara Natal bersama bagi umat Islam hukumnya haram. MUI menyatakan, perayaan Natal bersama kerap disalahartikan sebagian umat Islam dan dianggap sama dengan perayaan maulud Nabi Muhammad.

Karena salah pengertian tersebut, ada sebagian orang Islam yang ikut dalam perayaan Natal dan duduk dalam kepanitiaan Natal. Padahal, bagi orang-orang Kristen perayaan Natal merupakan bagian dari kegiatan ibadah mereka.

Ketua MUI Yunahar Ilyas juga menyatakan, umat Islam tak boleh mengucapkan selamat Natal. Sebab, Natal bagi Nasrani merupakan perayaan kelahiran Yesus Kristus. Ia juga mengacu pada fatwa MUI 1981 saat masih diketuai Buya Hamka.

Terkait Natal, umat Islam cukup bersikap toleran, yakni tak mengganggu mereka saat merayakannya. Yunahar mengatakan, toleransi beragama suatu keharusan. Ada rasa saling menghormati dengan tetap berpegang teguh pada keyakinan masing-masing.

Sekretaris Komisi Fatwa MUI Asrorun Niam Sholeh mengatakan, pada prinsipnya apa pun agamanya harus saling menguntungkan dan tidak mengintervensi. "Kita semua sudah dewasa dan sudah tahu batasan teologisnya," ujarnya.

Bendahara Umum Pimpinan Pusat (PP) Muhammadiyah Anwar Abbas mengatakan, perlu upaya mencari kosakata pengganti ucapan selamat Natal yang tidak merusak akidah Muslim. Ia beralasan, Islam mempunyai keyakinan berbeda dengan Nasrani.

Di antaranya, dalam melihat sosok Isa. Bagi umat Kristiani, Isa adalah Tuhan yang lahir ke dunia. Sedangkan, bagi umat Islam, Isa adalah manusia biasa yang lahir ke dunia. Isa kemudian menjadi nabi. Dalam bahasa Yunani, ujar Anwar, Natal artinya lahir atau maulud.

Muslim boleh merayakan kelahiran Isa. "Namun, perlu diyakini dalam diri umat Islam merayakan kelahiran seorang nabi, bukan Tuhan," kata Anwar. Ia menambahkan, penyampaian ucapan selamat Natal menimbulkan masalah secara teologis.

Sebab, ucapan itu berarti pengakuan bahwa Isa sebagai Tuhan. Kalaupun mau mengucapkan kalimat itu, yakini bahwa Isa bukanlah Tuhan yang lahir ke dunia. Lebih aman kalau ucapan itu diganti dengan "happy holiday" atau "semoga kita semua sejahtera".

Sekjen Pengurus Besar Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) Marsudi Syuhud menyatakan, tak soal memberikan ucapan selamat Natal. "Sepanjang kita meyakini Nabi Isa sebagai nabi yang diutus Allah, dalam hal muamalah mengucapkan selamat Natal itu tidak apa-apa."

Marsudi merujuk Surah Maryam ayat 30 yang menegaskan Isa hamba Allah. Dan, Allah memberikan kepadanya Injil. Dalam ayat tersebut, jelas Nabi Isa adalah seorang nabi utusan Allah. Keyakinan inilah yang harus ada dalam diri setiap Muslim.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Inspektorat Jenderal (Irjen) Kementerian Agama (Kemenag) menyampaikan hasil pengawasan kinerja instansinya selama 2013. Inspektur Jendral Kemenag, M Yasin mengatakan hasil pengawasan dan audit kinerja di lingkungan Kemenag selama 2013 telah membuat beberapa catatan penting yang harus diperbaiki.

Salah satunya, ujar dia adalah, gratifikasi penghulu yang telah menjadi polemik di masyarakat. Menurut dia, masalah gratifikasi penghulu yang diungkap oleh kejaksaan merupakan fokus perbaikan dari Irjen Kemenag, dengan harapan pada 2014 mendatang akan ada solusi cepat dan permanen.

"Agar tidak terus menimbulkan polemik, kita carikan solusi permasalahan gratifikasi pencatatan nikah oleh penghulu ini dengan empat usulan multitarif," ujarnya kepada wartawan saat menyampaikan hasil kinerja akhir selama 2013, di kantor Inspektorat Jendral Kemenag Jakarta, Selasa, (31/12).

Yasin mengungkapkan, empat usulan multitarif itu yakni, Pertama, pernikahan untuk kalangan miskin gratis tidak ditarik biaya. Kedua, pernikahan selain kalangan miskin di KUA dikenai biaya Rp 50 ribu. Ketiga, pernikahan selain kalangan miskin di luar KUA dikenai biaya Rp 400 ribu dan Keempat, pernikahan bertempat di gedung pertemuan akan dikenai biaya Rp 1 juta.

"Usulan ini berdasarkan rapat internal Irjen dan sebagai solusi subsidi silang sesuai asas keadilan," ujarnya. Ia menjelaskan adanya usulan poin keempat pernikahan dikenai biaya Rp 1 juta bila pernikahan dan pencatatan nikah dilakukan di gedung pertemuan, berdasarkan faktor keadilan
