Jakarta Civil Servants Must Use Public Transportation Every Friday, New Regulation Says
Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo finalized on Thursday a gubernatorial regulation requiring civil servants to use public transportation the first Friday of every month.
"Beginning on January 3, all officials and civil servants must use public transportation and not use private motorized vehicles," Joko said, as quoted by Indonesian news portal Merdeka.com.
He strongly recommended that civil servants use public transportation or ride bicycles to the office.
Joko has been seen lately riding a bicycle from his official house in Menteng to City Hall on Jalan Merdeka Selatan.
"These last two Fridays I have been riding a bike," Joko said.
The governor added that he was still mulling over how many days per month he should enforce the regulation.
"Maybe this will be a once-a-month [plan], or even twice or four times a month. Perhaps it will be everyday," he told news portal Detik.com.
The gubernatorial instruction was signed on December 30, 2013.
The new regulation applies to all civil servants working for the Jakarta administration, but exempts ambulance technicians, firefighters, disaster mitigation officials and public order officers (Satpol PP).
"To those civil servants who violate it, there will be disciplinary sanctions levied according to the law," he said.
