East Kalimantan Police Investigate Possible Sale of Island to Malaysian

Berau. Police in East Kalimantan's Berau district are looking into a report that a small island off the coast may have been illegally sold to a Malaysian national residing in Samarinda, the provincial capital.

Adj. Sr. Comr. Mukti Juharsa, the district police chief, said on Tuesday that there were allegations that the island of Nusa Kokok, measuring four hectares, was sold for Rp 600 million ($61,800).

"This is an issue about which there's a lot of speculation at this point, but we haven't received any confirmed reports," he told the Jakarta Globe.

"Nevertheless, we will still look into the information we've already received so that we can prevent any unrest the speculation may cause."

Kudarat, the head of Berau's Maratua subdistrict, which includes Nusa Kokok, denied the allegation.

He said a farmer living on the island was planning to sell his palm oil farm to an ethnic Chinese Indonesian from Samarinda.

"I have to stress that the buyer is Indonesian, not Malaysian as is being reported, and that it's not the entire island that's being sold, but just the farm belonging to one of the residents," Kudarat said.

He acknowledged he had signed the necessary paperwork for the deal, but denied taking a commission from the sale.

However, police said they had no information to corroborate the subdistrict chief's account of a land sale, and would investigate the matter thoroughly.

The sale of Indonesian islands to foreigners, which is ostensibly not permitted, has long been a hot-button issue, particularly in border regions.

In February this year, authorities in the Riau Islands province, close to both Singapore and Malaysia, declared illegal an attempt to offer an island there for sale to international buyers.
