Death Row Inmate Given Private Room for Sex, Drug Use With Model Girlfriend
The head of East Jakarta's Cipinang drug penitentiary has been suspended following reports that the jail provided a special private room for a death row inmate to meet with his girlfriend, an official said on Thursday.
"It is true, the official in question has been suspended as of July 25. This was done to facilitate the process of investigation," Akbar Hadi, the spokesman of the directorate general for penitentiary affairs at the Justice and Human Rights Ministry, said.
Akbar was referring to Thurman Hutapea, the director of the Cipinang drug jail, which is adjacent to the high security Cipinang prison in East Jakarta.
Akbar also said that the investigation, currently being conducted by the ministry's inspectorate general, was related to reports of the existence of a "special room" at the detention facility.
Vanny Rossyane, 22, told the Indonesian news portal detik.com earlier this week that she had been able to have intimate relations and even enjoy drugs with her boyfriend, Freddy Budiman, who is currently on the death row and being detained at the Cipinang narcotics prison.
Presenting pictures to support her claim, she said that her meetings and activities with Freddy were made possible by the availability of a "private room" at the jail.
She said the facility had been made available to them since November last of year and that the last time they used of the room was in May.
She said that after arranging for the meeting by telephone, she would come to the jail and on average spend about six hours on each visit.
Freddy, 37, was sentenced to death by the West Jakarta municipal court on July 15 after he was found guilty of organizing an attempt to smuggle 1.4 million ecstasy pills from China.
The court, arguing that the convict had organized the smuggling while he was in jail for another drug offense, also prohibited him from having access to communication devices.
Vanny, a model, said she was introduced to Freddy at the same jail through another friend.
The report was the latest to address the special facilities and privileges wealthy convicts and detainees can enjoy in prisons. Records showed that rooms with wide flat screen televisions, karaoke rooms, fitness equipments and cells with air conditioners and plush beds have been discovered among the special facilities made available to rich detainees.
