New office inaugurated to support US-RI partnership

The Millennium Challenge Account-Indonesia (MCA-Indonesia) inaugurated its new office with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday.

The Millennium Challenge Corporation's (MCC) US$600 million compact with Indonesia for the period of 2013-2018 supports the US-Indonesia Comprehensive Partnership through three major projects addressing Indonesian government national development priorities.

The projects focus on green economic growth, maternal and infant nutrition, and public procurement modernization.

"The MCC compact is a significant component of the US-Indonesia Comprehensive Partnership, and it is the largest investment the US government has made in many years," said US Embassy Chargé d'Affaires Kristen Bauer in a statement made available to The Jakarta Post on Saturday.

She said the MCC compact with Indonesia included the largest energy and environmental components of any MCC country program.

"This is also the first MCC compact with a focus on maternal and infant nutrition," Bauer said during the inaugural celebration.

Under the leadership of its executive director J.W.Saputro, MCA-Indonesia is now responsible for managing and implementing MCC funds for the compact.

"MCC is proud to play an important role in the US Comprehensive Partnership with Indonesia and looks forward to continuing to build people-to-people connections and strengthen the partnership with MCA-Indonesia to implement this exciting compact," said MCC Deputy Vice President for Europe, Asia, Pacific and Latin America Tom Hurley.

Chairman of the MCA-Indonesian Board of Trustees Lukita Dinarsyah Tuwo said since April, MCA-I had been preparing necessary aspects for the implementation of the program.

"We are currently supporting the Health Ministry's scaling-up of its nutrition program, which is scheduled to be launched in the middle of October," he said.

"In the Green Prosperity program, we are working with potential financial institution partners, finalizing the selection of new districts for program sites, and laying the groundwork for future investment." (ebf)
