With 250 million people the fourth most populous country in the world, Indonesia will soon elect a new leader.

Prabowo Subianto is a man transformed, driven by a persistent ambition to serve the Indonesian people as its head of state. Once the feared head of Indonesia's notorious special forces known as Kopassus, now Prabowo puts those days firmly behind him.

Nelson Mandela was also blacklisted from the United States at one time, am I not in good company?

For the third time he will contest the presidency in 2014 on populist policies. Surveys show he would become the president of the world's most populous Muslim nation if elections were held now.

But athough his military career made him into the man he is today, his controversial past may yet also prove to be his biggest challenge.

The US has banned him because he is accused of overseeing the forced disappearances of activists and torture of pro-independent fighters in East Timor.

And in the rough and tumble of Indonesian politics Prabowo has made some powerful enemies.

But he says he will be the kind of strong leader Indonesia needs, and he has recently been called 'Indonesia's Lee Kwan Yew' in reference to Singapore's authoritarian former prime minister.

"I think a leader should be strong, How can you be a leader if you are not strong? You must have strong character, you must have strong integrity, you must have strong belief in common sense, in honesty. How can you have a weak leader anywhere in the world? I once met a very successful governor of one of our provinces and he told me 'Prabowo, the essence of leadership ... is very simple, two things: love your people, use your common sense.' This is guiding me."

Today on Talk to Al Jazeera we speak to the man who may be the next president of Indonesia about democracy in Indonesia, accusations against him, his political vision, and the future of his country.

"When you serve as a soldier in the highest echelons, you will always be subject to accusations, charges, defamation of character - that's the risk of your profession .... They are designed to destroy my reputation ... This is my third general election; I have been competing in politics for 15 years in business. So every time my support goes up, accusations start coming, but the Indonesian people they are not that stupid, you know, that's why I am getting strong support."
