Indonesia: Flag Dispute Put Off

The Indonesian government has extended by 60 days a deadline for the government in Aceh Province to annul a new bylaw that declares the banner of a former armed separatist movement to be the province's official flag and seal, a Ministry of Home Affairs official said Monday. Zaini Abdullah, the governor of Aceh, had faced a Tuesday deadline to strike down the bylaw, which was passed by the provincial legislature last month. The dispute centers on the outlawed flag of the Free Aceh Movement, now defunct, which signed a peace agreement with the Indonesian government in 2005 that ended a 29-year civil war. The national government and armed forces oppose the use of the banner, citing multiple national laws against separatism. Officials in Aceh say the peace agreement and the province's special autonomy status allow it to have its own flag and seal.
