Police Arrest University Students Allegedly Involved In Ambon Bombing
Maluku police arrested two university students allegedly responsible for setting off a pipe bomb in Ambon on April 6.
"This is not an act of terrorism. The incident was triggered by their dissatisfaction with the service provided by a prostitute. ... We are still investigating where they got the bomb from," National Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Agus Rianto said on Thursday.
Agus said the two suspects, Muhammad Malawat and Taufik S., were arrested on Tuesday. They are both students at Pattimura University in Ambon.
"This is just a crime. It has nothing to do with their school. They were just disappointed with the service and decided to detonate the bomb."
The suspects are currently being detained at the Ambon police office.
The bomb was set off on April 6 in Tantui Bawah, Ambon, and it damaged a house and wounded one person. The police also discovered several empty liquor bottles at the scene.
Agus said that the suspects could be charged under Article 12 of the 1951 Emergency Law for the illegal possession of firearms and explosives. They could face capital punishment.
A bomb exploded at the Pasar Mardika Terminal in Ambon early in October of last year, but no injuries or fatalities resulted.
The police's elite counterterrorism unit, known as Densus 88, often carries out raids in the restive Maluku region.
