Suspected maid torturer arrested fleeing Hong Kong

Law Wan Tung, the 44-year-old woman who had allegedly tortured her Indonesian domestic helper Erwiana Sulistyaningsih, was arrested by local police while attempting to flee Hong Kong, the Indonesian consulate in Hong Kong said on Tuesday.

"The employer had previously been closely monitored by the police and was arrested when attempting to leave Hong Kong. She has been detained by the police until the investigation into the case is completed," the Indonesian consulate general in Hong Kong said in a statement made available to The Jakarta Post.

Hong Kong Police detectives, along with officials from Hong Kong Labor Department and a team of officials from the Indonesian consulate, traveled to Sragen, Central Java, on Monday, to interview Erwiana, who was being treated at a hospital in the town.

Hong Kong Police investigators are still sorting through the information they had gathered from questioning Erwiana. "The information compilation is expected to be completed today," the statement added.

Reports confirmed that Wan Tung had been arrested at the airport.

"The Indonesian consulate will continue monitoring developments in the Erwiana case and engage in cooperation and coordination with all related parties in both Indonesia and Hong Kong," the statement reads.

On Sunday, thousands of people, mostly foreign domestic helpers, staged a march in Hong Kong to protest the alleged abuse of Erwiana, which has sparked concerns about the treatment of maids in Hong Kong.

The 22-year-old girl sustained severe injuries allegedly due to abusive treatment by her employer over a period of eight months.

Erwiana was unable to walk when she fled her employer's home in Hong Kong and flew back to Indonesia earlier this month.

Hong Kong employs nearly 300,000 domestic helpers, mainly from Indonesia and the Philippines.
