Larry Flynt says man who shot and paralysed him should not be executed
Joseph Paul Franklin is due to be put to death in Missouri in November but publisher does not 'want to see him die'
The porn publisher Larry Flynt has said he doesn't want to see the man whose gunshots left him paralysed 35 years ago to be put to death for his crimes.
In an essay published on Thursday in The Hollywood Reporter, Flynt wrote that while he would love to torture Joseph Paul Franklin, he does not believe in the death penalty.
Flynt wrote: "In all the years since the shooting, I have never come face-to-face with Franklin. I would love an hour in a room with him and a pair of wire-cutters and pliers, so I could inflict the same damage on him that he inflicted on me. But, I do not want to kill him, nor do I want to see him die."
Flynt, the publisher of Hustler magazine, said keeping Franklin locked in a tiny prison cell for the rest of his life would be a greater punishment.
Franklin has been in prison since 1980, for a string of shootings that left five people dead and others wounded. He is scheduled to be executed in Missouri on 20 November. Franklin targeted black people, Jews and people, like Flynt, who he believed promoted interracial relations.
