Escalating infighting widens rift among Syria terrorists

According to Press TV, al-Qaeda-affiliated Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) have set a two-day deadline for the Free Syrian Army to surrender amid escalating infighting among the militants in Syria. The ultimatum is the latest manifestation of inner conflict among extremist militant groups in Syria since the outbreak of turmoil in March 2011. Opposition activists say clashes between Takfiri militants have increased in recent months.   Meanwhile, head of the key Syrian opposition National Coalition, Ahmad Jarba, has denounced extremists he said were trying to "steal our revolution", AFP reported. He made the comments in an address in New York to representatives from the Friends of Syria -- international backers of the terrorists seeking to overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad government. An unknown number of foreign fighters has streamed into Syria to join jihadist rebel groups such as the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Al-Nusra Front and Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). They include fighters from Europe, the Middle East and Chechnya.   Rebels initially welcomed the jihadist groups and the foreign fighters who joined them, eager for weapons and battle experience. But in recent months, relations have been tense, particularly between ISIL and non-jihadist rebel factions, which have clashed on occasion. This week, some of the biggest non-jihadist battalions formed an alliance that includes Al-Nusra, and announced their rejection of the Coalition that Jarba heads. According to extracts from British defense consultancy IHS Jane's published in the Daily Telegraph, some 100,000 militants are operating in Syria. The militants have split into some 1,000 brands since the Syria crisis began, said the study, which is based on intelligence estimates and interviews with militants. Around 10,000 of the militants, with many being foreign nationals, are fighting for groups affiliated with al-Qaeda such as the al-Nusra Front and the rest fight for different militant groups.
