House Approves 22 New Ambassadors

Former Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo has been made Indonesia's ambassador to Germany, while all 21 other candidates for the top diplomatic positions had their appointments confirmed by a House of Representatives committee on Wednesday.
"The fit-and-proper test for the 22 ambassador candidates was conducted last night [Wednesday] and Commission I has made its decision," Mahfudz Siddiq, the head of Commission I on defense and foreign affairs, told Indonesian news portal Detik.com.
"We decided that all candidates were worthy of the job, so they all passed the test," he said.
Commission I deputy chairman Ramadhan Pohan said the government's decision to recommend Fauzi Bowo as ambassador to Germany made sense.
The former governor is a fluent speaker of German. As an undergraduate, Fauzi studied at Braunschweig University of Technology, in the then-West Germany. At the beginning of the last decade, Fauzi took his doctorate at the Technical University of Kaiserlautern.
The Indonesian Student Association (PPI) in Germany has raised objections to Fauzi's appointment.
The association sent an e-mail on Monday to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, the House of Representatives and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Hartono Sugih, the head of the PPI, wrote in the letter that Fauzi was not an appropriate candidate because he had made a slur against Jakarta deputy governor, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, on account of his ethnic background.
The letter also criticized Fauzi's record as Jakarta Governor.
The commission also approved lawyer Yusron Ihza Mahendra as the ambassador to Japan.
Yusron's appointment initially stirred up debate after some commission members argued he was too young for the job.
