Six airports closed and thousands evacuated their homes as East Java's Mount Kelud experienced an explosive eruption late Thursday night. The volcano emitted a column of ash 17 kilometers high, covering neighboring areas in a blanket of ash.

Six airports closed and thousands evacuated their homes as East Java's Mount Kelud experienced an explosive eruption late Thursday night. The volcano emitted a column of ash 17 kilometers high, covering neighboring areas in a blanket of ash.

Located in Kediri district, about 140 kilometers south of Surabaya, the eruption was felt as far west as Bandung, West Java.
