[batavia-news] Election Watch News + Dems may turn into opposition, says SBY

SBY admits defeat

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, in his capacity as chairman of the Democratic Party, congratulated the three political parties which, according to quick counts, stood among the top three in Wednesday's legislative election.

"According to quick counts, the Democratic Party is in fourth position with around 10 percent of the vote. This is a relatively low achievement as compared to our performance in the 2009 election. Assuming the quick count results are not that much different from the real and official tally, we fully accept the results," Yudhoyono told a press conference at his residence in Cikeas, West Java, at 9:30 p.m., delayed from the originally scheduled time of 6 p.m.

"On behalf of the Democratic Party, I hereby extend my congratulations to the parties with a higher percentage of votes, particularly the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle [PDI-P], the Golkar Party, and the Gerindra Party," the President said.

He also called on Dems' members nationwide to accept the results. "Our party has been evaluating the results of this legislative election, and I will convey the outcome to all party members when the time comes, as part of our efforts ahead the next election in 2019," Yudhoyono said.

Some top political party figures, PDI-P chair Megawati Soekarnoputri and its presidential candidate Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, as well as Golkar chairman and presidential candidate Aburizal Bakrie, also held press conferences on the quick count results.

The Dems won the 2009 legislative election with 26 percent of the vote. It is believed that numerous high-profile graft cases involving the party's former and current members played a significant role in the party's dwindling support.

Dems may turn into opposition, says SBY

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, in his capacity as Democratic Party chairman, said that the party could turn into an opposition after his second term ends.

"Some asked me if the Democratic Party had decided on which parties it would form an alliance with. My answer is: not yet. We are still consolidating ourselves while observing the development of the political configuration [after the legislative election]. One thing's for sure, we are willing to maintain communications with other parties," Yudhoyono told a press conference at his residence in Cikeas, West Java, on Wednesday night.

"Some also asked, is it possible for us to form a coalition with the Gerindra Party? Of course, it is too soon to answer that now. In politics, everything is possible. But this is not the right time to answer such a specific question," he added.

Yudhoyono also commented on whether the party could turn into an opposition after his tenure ends. "Whether we will maintain power share or be in opposition, both are possible. If we are comfortable [with the government coalition partners], we will remain inside [the government]. But if we think it would be better for us to be outside [the government], we are ready to serve as the opposition," he said.

Several pollster quick counts showed that the ruling party's electability had nose-dived, from the 26 percent it got in 2009, to around 9 to 10 percent this year.
