Indonesian Woman Allegedly Raped by Malaysian Police
Malaysian police have arrested one of their own officers over the alleged rape of an Indonesian woman following an immigration raid in Selangor state, foreign affairs ministry officials reported on Friday.
Indonesian officials are working to identify the victim to offer the woman legal counseling. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the incident on Friday after the arrest of an unidentified lance corporal hit local newspapers.
"The Indonesian embassy is currently coordinating with lawyers to take legal action," Tatang Razak, director of Indonesian citizen protection affairs at the Foreign Affairs Ministry, told the Jakarta Globe. "The embassy will meet with the victim today to follow up on the case."
The officer, described in Malaysian press as a man in his 20s with a wife and two children, conducted an immigration raid on a home in Bandar Baru Bangi township, a small area near the district capital of Kajang, Selangor on Dec. 10. The woman's husband and roommate had the correct documents and were left at the house.
The woman failed to produce the required immigration paperwork and was escorted to the officer's car. He transported her to a nearby police station and allegedly told the woman she had to sleep with him to avoid being locked up.
She was taken to a cheap hotel and raped, the local Malay Mail Online reported.
The woman reported the crime to officers at a different precinct. The officer was then arrested.
It was the second rape of an Indonesian citizen by Malaysian police reported in a year. In November of last year, three officers allegedly gang-raped a 25-year-old nightclub worker in Penang. The alleged rape triggered Anti-Malaysia protests in Indonesia and denials from the Royal Malaysian Police.
"I hereby deny the accusation as it is indeed meant to defame the Royal Malaysian Police, especially my staff in Penang," State deputy police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Jaafar told the state-run Bernama news wire. "The medical report from the Penang Hospital says there was no sign of her having been raped or beaten."
The court case is ongoing and the officers have been suspended, Indonesian officials said.
