Press Release

VICTIMS OF INDONESIA'S HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES TO TESTIFY AT PUBLIC HEARING IN JAKARTA

Thirty-two victims of human rights violations committed in Indonesia between 1965 -2005 will share their stories of victimization, abuse and survival at a public hearing to be held in Jakarta from 25th-29th November 2013.

Victims, from provinces across Indonesia, will testify in front of a "Citizens' Council", a committee of 22 prominent national figures who strongly believe in the recognition of Indonesia's violent history as the keystone for the nation's transition to democracy. Victims will  touch upon subjects that are at the core of Indonesia's crimes against humanity, including violence against women, religious conflict, conflict over natural resources, military operations, and the rigid climate of impunity.

The public hearings are being organised by the Coalition for Justice and Truth, or  KKPK (Koalisi Keadilan dan Pengungkapan Kebenaran), which comprises 47 NGOs nationwide.  The event is being pushed under the slogan, "Speaking the Truth, Breaking the Circle of Violence."  It is part of a wider civil society initiative in the context of the "Year of Truth", a year-long campaign to promote social justice in Indonesia, and to establish the truth on past violations.  Galuh Wandita, Director of Asia Justice and Rights (AJAR) says "
Fifteen years into reformation, there is still no official recognition of our violent past and victims continue to face discrimination. This civil society initiative is a response to the vacuum created by the state."

Through the public hearings, the KKPK coalition hopes to raise public awareness of the events of 1965 -2005,  and work towards the official recognition of the impact of human rights abuses on victims and their families.  In particular, the KKPK aims to underline  the direct consequences that this has for the establishment of democracy and the rule of law in Indonesia, in an attempt to shift the deeply-rooted climate of impunity that was established under Soeharto's regime.  Haris Azhar, Chairman of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence, KontraS, highlights the nature of the on-going issue of impunity, "If the government cannot solve human rights cases, people in power may do similar things as they see that they are free from punishment".

Today, thousands of victims still experience discrimination and abuse, and although Indonesia has made some progress in human rights protection since the Reformasi period of 1998, the judicial arm still remains weak. To date, all those brought to trial for crimes against humanity have been acquitted.  Head of a victim's  group in Palu Central Sulawesi, SKP HAM, Nurlaela AK Lamasitudju, underlines the crucial role that the Indonesian public have to play in pushing for change in this area,
"As long as the Indonesian public remain indifferent, the government will continue to ignore its obligation to fulfill victim's rights to truth and justice."

The hearings will take place at the National Library building in Jakarta on 25-29 November 2013, and are open to the public. Gedung Teater Perpustakaan Nasional, Jl. Salemba Raya 28A Jakarta Pusat. The conclusions of the  Citizens' Council will be presented on 29th November 2013.
