Escaped Terror Convict Hid in Medan and Aceh Before Sailing to Malaysia
Terror convict Fadli Sadama — who escaped from a North Sumatra prison in July and was recaptured in Malaysia last month — moved between hiding places in Medan and Aceh during his time on the run before entering Malaysia by boat, police said on Wednesday.
"He took a fishing boat from Tanjung Gusta harbor to Kuala Selangor port [in Malaysia]," police spokesman Brig. Gen Boy Rafli Amar said. "Once there, he stayed at a house owned by a Malaysian of Indonesian origin in Jinjang Selatan, Kuala Lumpur."
Fadli was to serve until December 2021 in Medan's Tanjung Gusta prison after he was convicted of robbing a Medan branch of CIMB Niaga bank in order to fund terrorist activities. He escaped on July 11 of this year and was extradited by Malaysia in November.
"We are thankful to Malaysia for this good cooperation," Boy said. "We are currently studying a number of cases in which Fadli is suspected of involvement, that took place before the CIMB Niaga bank robbery."
After his escape, police said Fadli hid on a palm oil plantation in Matulung, near Medan, until a relative picked him up and hid him. He stayed with the relative for two weeks before moving to a friend's house for a week, then back to the relative's house.
"He then went to see a colleague in Aceh for one month, then returned to Medan before escaping to Malaysia," Boy said. "This is Fadli's second escape to Malaysia. We arrested him in Malaysia in October, 2010. We will also investigate the people who assisted him or hid him, and we have not disclosed if there is a possibility that they will face criminal charges."
While he was outside prison, Boy said that Fadli sold crystal methamphetamine and hashish which he obtained from an international syndicate, and he may have also dealt drugs in prison.
"This man is very dangerous," Boy said. "He was also involved in provoking and influencing his fellow inmates to escape from prison. For this provocation and arson in the prison, he could face charges."
Police said they were still gathering evidence for potential drug charges.
Fadli escaped during a July 11 riot, along with more than 200 other inmates. Five people — three wardens and two prisoners — were killed in the incident.
Most of the escapees were recaptured shortly after.
