Surabaya DPRD Chair Calls Lion's Death 'an Inside Job'
Surabaya. The death of a young African lion at this city's notorious "nightmare zoo" has prompted claims of foul play by the Surabaya Regional Legislative Council (DPRD).
Michael, an 18-month-old lion, was found strangled to death with his head stuck in a metal cable used to secure the lion cage on Tuesday morning. An independent investigation found that the lion was likely responding to nearby female lions who were in heat when the cable wrapped around his neck, depriving him of oxygen.
But DPRD chairman M. Machmud doubted the report, claiming in an interview with the state-run Antara News Agency that the lion's death was "an inside job."
"I don't believe it," Machmud said. "A lion can't commit a perfect suicide. It is likely an inside job."
The politician believed that someone at the zoo killed the lion, explaining that no one else would know Michael's exact location or have the courage to approach the beast.
Singky Soewadji, an independent observer, conducted a private investigation into the incident and ruled Michael's death as an accident. The report was similar to an explanation issued by the zoo shortly after Michael's death.
"The lion's unusual movements pulled the steel wire that was usually used to open the door and normally placed outside the cage," Singky explained. The wire then wrapped around the lion's neck, killing it.
Machmud said the report "doesn't make sense," and called for an additional investigation.
"Lions sleep at night, so it is impossible that they struggled to release themselves [during the nighttime hours]," he said. "It doesn't make sense."
If an investigation does determine that someone at the zoo caused the lion's death, Machmud said he had a punishment in mind.
"If we find the perpetrators, we should put them inside that lion's cage first," he said.
